Dear Hiring Manager,

I am excited to apply for the Assistant Director, Data Science position on the Renters Portfolio team. With a Ph.D. in Statistics and over 4 years of experience in predictive modeling, I have successfully led pricing programs that drove double-digit growth. My expertise in machine learning and cross-functional leadership aligns perfectly with the requirements of this role.

At my previous company, I owned end-to-end model deployment and collaborated with product and IT teams to launch innovative pricing strategies. I thrive in environments that require both deep technical work and strategic influence. I am particularly drawn to the opportunity to shape the future of pricing at Liberty Mutual.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to discussing how I can contribute to your team.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Can you describe a time when you led a complex data science project from conception to deployment?
I led a project to develop a dynamic pricing model for auto insurance. I collaborated with product managers to define KPIs, built gradient boosting models, deployed via API, and monitored performance. The model improved loss ratio by 8%.
How do you handle tradeoffs between model complexity and interpretability for regulatory requirements?
I prioritize interpretability for regulatory filing. I use SHAP values and partial dependence plots to explain models. If a complex model is needed, I pair it with a simpler explainable model for compliance.
Describe your experience collaborating with non-technical stakeholders like product managers.
I regularly present to product leaders using visualizations and plain language. I translate business questions into analytical frameworks and align on priorities through regular check-ins.
How do you stay current with emerging modeling techniques?
I follow academic journals, attend conferences like KDD, and participate in internal knowledge-sharing sessions. Recently, I explored causal inference methods for pricing optimization.
Walk me through your approach to validating a pricing model before deployment.
I use A/B testing on a holdout sample, backtesting on historical data, and simulate regulatory scenarios. I also involve actuarial teams for cross-validation and document assumptions.

  • Collaborate across functions: Partner with Delivery, Specialty Product, Program Management, IT, and other teams to ensure fast, effective launches.
  • Analyze & iterate: Monitor Post Launch results and work hand-in-hand with business teams to refine go-forward market strategy.
