Key Skills

Data Engineering Data Warehouse ETL Business Intelligence Leadership Project Management SQL Cloud Computing Team Management Stakeholder Communication

I am writing to express my enthusiastic interest in the Assistant Director of Data Engineering position at the University of Colorado System Administration. With a strong background in data warehousing, ETL development, and team leadership, I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to the university's mission of excellence in higher education.

In my previous role, I successfully led a team of data engineers in designing and implementing scalable data solutions, resulting in improved data accessibility and decision-making. My experience in partnering with business intelligence and integration teams aligns well with the collaborative nature of this position.

I am particularly drawn to CU's commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive work environment. I am eager to bring my technical expertise and strategic vision to further enhance the university's data capabilities.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the possibility of discussing how my skills and experiences can benefit UIS and the University of Colorado.

Can you describe your experience leading a data engineering team and how you set priorities for multiple projects?
In my last role, I managed a team of 8 data engineers. I set priorities by aligning projects with business goals, using agile methodologies to break work into sprints. I held weekly planning meetings to assess workloads and adjust as needed, ensuring timely delivery.
How would you approach designing a data warehouse that serves multiple lines of business with different needs?
I would start by meeting with stakeholders to understand their data requirements and key metrics. Then, using a modular architecture with data marts for each domain, I'd ensure scalability and flexibility. I'd also establish data governance to maintain consistency and quality.
Tell me about a time you implemented a new ETL tool or process. What was the impact?
I led the migration from a legacy ETL tool to Apache Airflow. I planned the transition in phases, trained the team, and ensured zero downtime. This reduced processing time by 40% and improved monitoring capabilities, directly impacting data freshness.
How do you stay current with data engineering trends, and how would you apply them at CU?
I regularly attend conferences, follow industry blogs, and experiment with new tools. For CU, I see potential in using cloud-based data lakes and real-time streaming to support faster analytics. I would pilot such technologies with a small use case before scaling.
Describe your experience collaborating with non-technical stakeholders. How do you communicate technical concepts?
I find it essential to use analogies and visualizations. For example, when explaining data warehousing, I compare it to a library's catalog system. I also create dashboards that show data lineage and impact, making it easier for stakeholders to understand.
