Dear Hiring Manager,

I am excited to apply for the Senior Business Engineer position at Reddit. With over 5 years of experience in software development and a passion for building technical partnerships, I have a proven track record of driving successful integrations and delivering scalable solutions. My expertise in backend development, REST APIs, and cross-functional collaboration aligns perfectly with the requirements of this role.

At my previous company, I led end-to-end technical projects that involved working directly with partners to integrate their platforms with ours, resulting in increased adoption and revenue. I thrive in fast-paced environments and enjoy taking ownership of complex challenges.

I am particularly drawn to Reddit's mission of fostering community and authentic conversations, and I would love to contribute to the growth of its advertising platform. Thank you for considering my application.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Can you describe a time when you led a technical integration with an external partner? What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
I worked with a major ad platform to integrate their API with ours. We faced latency issues due to different data formats. I proposed using a message queue to decouple the systems and implemented a transformation layer, which resolved the issue and improved performance by 30%.
How do you approach designing a solution that meets the needs of both internal teams and external partners?
I start by understanding the requirements from all stakeholders, then prototype a minimal viable solution. I prioritize flexibility and documentation, and iterate based on feedback. For example, when building an SDK, I involved both internal developers and partner engineers to ensure usability.
Explain a complex technical concept (e.g., OAuth2) to a non-technical stakeholder.
OAuth2 is like a valet key for your car. Instead of giving your car keys to a parking attendant, you give them a special key that only allows them to park the car and nothing else. Similarly, OAuth2 allows third-party apps to access specific data without giving away your password.
Describe your experience with REST APIs and how you ensure they are robust and scalable.
I design REST APIs with clear resource endpoints, proper HTTP methods, and pagination. I use rate limiting and caching to handle load. I also implement thorough testing, including load testing, and monitor performance metrics to identify bottlenecks.
How do you stay updated with the latest trends in AdTech and developer tools?
I follow industry blogs, attend webinars, and participate in developer communities like Stack Overflow and GitHub. I also experiment with new tools in side projects. Recently, I learned about serverless architectures and applied it to optimize a data pipeline.

As a key member of this rapidly expanding team, you’ll have the opportunity to take meaningful ownership—driving cutting-edge AdTech integrations, launching and managing strategic partnership programs, and helping scale Reddit’s developer ecosystem.

At Reddit, a Business Engineer plays a critical role in driving the success of our advertising API products and platform integrations. This experienced engineer role combines deep technical consulting with hands-on engineering, where you’ll guide strategic integrations, often contributing directly to implementation across Reddit’s stack or in the codebases of partners (or direct advertisers). You will be a key technical advisor—trusted to own the end-to-end relationship with Reddit’s most important advertising partners, and execute on the long-term strategy for how we develop an ecosystem of developers.

You’ll work across engineering, product, sales, and business development teams to connect Reddit’s capabilities to the evolving needs of the market. You won’t just recommend solutions—you’ll implement them across systems, including platform changes, and also help define frameworks for scaling and repeatability. If you’re passionate about creating high-impact technical partnerships, influencing roadmaps, and building at the intersection of AdTech and developer experience, this is the role for you.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a trusted technical advisor and solutions architect for strategic partners (or direct advertisers), guiding them through the integration and adoption of Reddit’s advertising APIs and tools.
  • Design and prototype proof-of-concept solutions that accelerate technical enablement and create tangible value for partners (or direct advertisers). These builds may occur in Reddit’s systems or directly within the client’s or partner’s codebase.
  • Collaborate directly with engineering teams at partner (or direct advertiser) organizations to optimize performance, address integration gaps, and troubleshoot complex issues.
  • Lead onboarding, testing, and pre-launch support to ensure a smooth and successful implementation experience.
  • Represent the technical voice of the partner (or direct advertiser) internally, surfacing feedback and influencing product and platform priorities to improve outcomes for both sides.
  • Support escalations for complex or high-impact integrations and provide clear, actionable direction to resolve blockers quickly and sustainably.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field—or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of software development experience, with a strong track record of owning end-to-end technical projects, including cross-org coordination.
  • Hands-on coding expertise in one or more modern programming languages (e.g., Python, Java, JavaScript, Node.js), with a focus on backend or API development.
  • Proven ability to contribute directly to external integrations and prototype in partner environments.
  • Strong understanding of REST APIs, HTTP, OAuth2 / OpenID Connect, and modern SDK patterns.
  • Effective communicator with experience presenting complex technical and business ideas to both internal leadership and external stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Deep understanding of the AdTech ecosystem and how Reddit’s platform aligns with industry trends and standards.
  • Contributions to developer experience through tooling, documentation, or ecosystem standards.
  • Track record of influencing product roadmaps and getting involved in release, launch and product adoption activities in collaboration with sales, product, and engineering.
  • Ads Industry experience & Ads Partnerships experience
