Dear Hiring Manager,

I am writing to express my strong interest in the Practitioner (National After Hours Service) position at Life Without Barriers. With a Certificate IV in Child, Youth and Family Intervention and extensive experience in out-of-home care, I am skilled in trauma-informed practice, crisis management, and providing policy-based guidance. My ability to remain calm and effective in high-volume after-hours settings aligns perfectly with the demands of this role.

I have a proven track record of supporting carers and staff through urgent situations, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of children and young people. I am adept at using CARE and TCI models, coordinating transitions, and documenting incidents clearly. I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to your mission of creating supportive environments for children.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to discussing how my skills can benefit your team.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Describe your experience with trauma-informed practice in a child protection context. How do you ensure your approach supports the well-being of children and young people?
I have worked extensively with children who have experienced trauma, using a trauma-informed lens to understand their behaviors and needs. I prioritize safety, trust, and collaboration, ensuring that every interaction is sensitive to their experiences. For example, I use de-escalation techniques and provide consistent, predictable routines to help them feel secure.
This role requires handling after-hours emergencies. Can you give an example of a time you handled a high-pressure situation involving a child or young person?
In a previous role, I received a late-night call about a young person in crisis. I remained calm, assessed the risk, and coordinated with emergency services and the carer. I provided clear guidance to the carer on de-escalation, followed up with the young person the next day, and documented the incident thoroughly. This ensured the young person's safety and maintained trust.
How do you stay updated on state-specific child protection policies and legal requirements?
I regularly review government websites, attend training sessions, and subscribe to updates from child protection authorities. I also collaborate with colleagues to share knowledge and ensure my practice aligns with current legislation. This proactive approach helps me provide accurate, policy-based advice in after-hours situations.
Explain how you would manage a conflict between a carer and a young person while maintaining professionalism and supporting both parties.
I would first ensure everyone is safe and calm. I would listen to both perspectives without judgment, validate their feelings, and use conflict resolution techniques to find a mutually acceptable solution. I would reinforce the care plan and therapeutic approach, and if needed, arrange follow-up mediation or additional support. Documentation of the incident is crucial for ongoing care.
Why do you want to work specifically in an after-hours service? What attracts you to this role at Life Without Barriers?
I am drawn to after-hours work because it allows me to provide critical support when families and carers need it most. Life Without Barriers' commitment to creating safe environments aligns with my values. I am eager to contribute my skills to a flexible, home-based role that makes a real difference in children's lives.
