Cover letter sample
Dear Hiring Manager,
I am thrilled to apply for the Lead iOS Engineer position at Ruby Labs. With over 8 years of iOS development and 3 years leading engineering teams, I have a strong track record of shipping and scaling B2C subscription apps to millions of users. At my previous company, I led the architecture overhaul that improved app startup time by 40% and implemented a modular dependency management system using SPM.
I bring deep expertise in Swift, Swift Concurrency, StoreKit 2, and CI/CD automation. I am passionate about mentoring engineers and fostering a culture of quality through comprehensive testing and performance budgets. I am particularly excited about Ruby Labs' consumer products and the opportunity to drive the iOS platform's technical vision.
Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to discussing how my technical leadership and hands-on experience can contribute to Ruby Labs' success.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
Sample interview questions
At my last company, our app had a monolithic architecture that caused slow build times and frequent merge conflicts. I proposed modularizing the codebase using SPM, dividing features into independent modules. I considered team structure, dependency management, and future scalability. The outcome was a 50% reduction in build times and faster feature development across teams.
I focus on efficient data caching, lazy loading, and minimizing main thread work. For subscriptions, I use StoreKit 2 with proper receipt validation and handle entitlement changes asynchronously. I also implement performance budgets and use Instruments to monitor memory, CPU, and startup time. Regular load testing helps identify bottlenecks before they affect users.
I balance hands-on coding with mentoring by pairing on complex tasks, conducting code reviews with detailed explanations, and setting clear coding standards. I encourage knowledge sharing through internal tech talks and establish apprenticeship patterns where juniors shadow me on critical features. This ensures growth without compromising delivery.
I set up automated builds and tests using Fastlane integrated with GitHub Actions. The pipeline includes unit, UI, and snapshot tests, with test coverage thresholds enforced. For releases, I use phased rollouts and automated code signing. I also implement crash reporting and performance monitoring to catch issues post-release.
We had a persistent memory leak in a complex animation module. Using Instruments, I traced it to a strong retain cycle in a custom transition delegate. I refactored it to use weak references and moved the delegate to a separate manager. This fixed the leak and improved overall app stability.
