Cover letter sample
Dear Hiring Team,
I am excited to apply for the Senior BI Engineer role at Sporty. With extensive experience translating business needs into reliable data models, SQL-based reporting datasets, and self-service dashboards, I can help strengthen trusted decision-making across the organization.
- Advanced SQL, dimensional modeling, semantic-layer design, and data-quality validation
- Stakeholder partnership to define consistent KPIs, metrics, and reporting standards
- Clear, intuitive dashboard delivery and investigation of data discrepancies through resolution
I am particularly drawn to Sporty’s remote-first culture and the opportunity to improve analytics accessibility while working closely with business stakeholders and Data Engineers. I would welcome the opportunity to contribute a proactive, ownership-oriented approach to your BI platform.
Sample interview questions
I start by clarifying the business decision the metric will support, its intended audience, grain, source systems, calculation logic, exclusions, time-zone rules, and ownership. I document the definition in a shared metrics catalog, implement it centrally in a semantic model where possible, validate it against known totals, and establish change-control practices so every dashboard uses the same governed definition.
I first reproduce the discrepancy and compare dashboard filters, date logic, aggregation grain, joins, and refresh timing. I trace the metric back through the semantic layer and SQL to source tables, use targeted reconciliation queries to isolate the variance, then partner with Data Engineers if the issue originates upstream. After correcting it, I document the root cause, add validation checks where practical, and communicate the impact and resolution to stakeholders.
For a self-service model, I begin with clearly defined business processes and establish the appropriate fact-table grain. I use conformed dimensions, intuitive business naming, reusable measures, and documented relationships while limiting direct exposure to unnecessary technical complexity. I also test common reporting paths for correctness and performance, then collect user feedback to refine the model without compromising governance.
I would inspect the query plan and identify expensive scans, skewed joins, redistribution, nested logic, and unnecessary data movement. Typical improvements include filtering early, selecting only needed columns, restructuring joins and aggregations, using appropriate distribution and sort keys, materializing reusable intermediate datasets, and ensuring statistics are current. I would benchmark changes against representative workloads and validate that results remain correct.
I prioritize requests using business impact, urgency, reach, data readiness, effort, and whether a solution can be reused broadly. I make priorities transparent through a shared backlog, deliver quick wins when they do not disrupt strategic work, and align stakeholders on timelines and trade-offs. For recurring requests, I look for opportunities to build governed self-service datasets or reusable dashboard components instead of producing one-off analyses.
