Cover letter sample

Dear Hiring Team,

I am excited to apply for the Scientific Engagement role at Ataraxis AI, where I can combine rigorous oncology knowledge with persuasive, outcome-focused physician engagement. My scientific training has prepared me to evaluate clinical evidence, discuss study design with expert stakeholders, and communicate complex findings clearly through concise written materials and data-driven presentations. I would bring a disciplined approach to personalized outreach, account follow-up, objection handling, and converting physician interest into early access, orders, or well-qualified sales handoffs. Ataraxis's mission to advance precision medicine through clinical AI strongly aligns with my interest in translating science into meaningful patient impact.

Sample interview questions
How would you explain clinical validation results for an AI oncology product to a skeptical oncologist?

I would begin by understanding the physician's patient population and decision context, then present the evidence in a structured way: study population, endpoint, comparator, performance, limitations, and clinical utility. I would avoid overstating results, address bias and generalizability directly, and connect the findings to a specific treatment decision or workflow.

Describe how you would respond if a physician challenges the comparator or design of a validation study.

I would acknowledge the concern and clarify the specific issue, such as selection bias, endpoint relevance, sample size, or comparator appropriateness. I would explain the study rationale and available supporting evidence, document any unresolved evidence gap, and involve clinical or product colleagues when a deeper technical response is needed.

How would you manage a high-volume outreach pipeline without sacrificing scientific quality?

I would segment accounts by specialty, institutional priority, and likelihood of conversion, then build reusable but personalized outreach sequences based on each physician's research interests and patient population. I would track response, meeting, qualification, and conversion metrics in a CRM and reserve deeper preparation for high-priority conversations.

Tell us about a time you translated complex scientific information for a nontechnical or commercially focused audience.

In a prior research or clinical setting, I would first identify the audience's decision need, then replace unnecessary technical detail with a clear narrative supported by a small number of meaningful data points and visuals. I would confirm understanding, address questions candidly, and provide a more detailed appendix or follow-up when needed.

What would you do after a strong physician conversation that does not immediately result in an order or early-access enrollment?

I would send a prompt, tailored follow-up summarizing the physician's priorities, relevant evidence, and agreed next step. I would log objections and stakeholder details, schedule a specific follow-up, and continue nurturing the account with useful clinical updates while coordinating a qualified handoff to field sales when appropriate.

About this role

This role is ideal for early-career candidates with scientific background, or candidates looking to transition to industry, who are competitive and interested in building the company through the commercial-scientific lens. You’ll run high-volume, high-quality scientific outreach to top physicians in the country. Your job is to first have a scientific conversation, run it credibly at a peer level, and convert it into business objectives: a first order, an early access enrollment, or a qualified handoff to our sales team. This is a rare opportunity that can grow into more scientific or more commercial roles long-term, and can provide significant upside, but will require people with more scientific background to handle commercial/sales-like conversations and focus on commercial outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Own outbound scientific engagement to high-priority oncologists and surgeons: personalized email, calls, video meetings, conference follow-up.

  • Present our validation data, methodology, and clinical utility evidence fluently and handle hard questions on study design, comparators, and guidelines.

  • Convert interest into first orders or early access participation; pass larger accounts to field sales with full context.

  • Feed physician objections and evidence gaps back to our clinical and product teams.

  • Support field reps as the on-call scientific closer for their toughest accounts.

Qualifications

  • PhD (or MD/PharmD) in a relevant field, ideally related to cancer biology.

  • Genuine command of clinical oncology literature; ability to read and critique trial design.

  • Persuasive writer and speaker: You enjoy convincing smart, skeptical people. You can present in a scientifically charming way.

  • We realize that your background might be science/research-heavy. This role is going to be the best for people who are competitive, can work in a metric-driven/outcome-driven environment, can work with quotas and maintaining commercial pipeline.

  • High proficiency in Google Slides/PowerPoint; able to craft compelling, clean, data-driven visuals.
