Sample interview questions
How would you design an API and SDK that must integrate reliably with many different customer codebases and technology stacks?

I would begin by identifying stable, customer-centered use cases and defining a versioned API contract with clear resource models, errors, pagination, authentication, and idempotency where needed. I would keep the SDK thin and predictable, provide strong TypeScript types, document integration patterns, and maintain backward compatibility through deprecation policies. Telemetry, sandbox environments, and representative integration tests would help identify real-world failure modes early.

Describe how you would improve rendering performance and reliability in a visual CMS or component-driven editor.

I would first instrument the rendering path to understand bottlenecks, including network waterfalls, unnecessary client-side work, expensive component trees, and editor-specific state updates. I would apply techniques such as memoization where appropriate, code splitting, caching, incremental loading, efficient state boundaries, and resilient fallbacks for malformed or unavailable content. I would validate improvements with production-like content models and performance budgets rather than relying only on local benchmarks.

How would you approach building agentic workflows for content creation and publishing while protecting customer systems?

I would design agents around constrained, observable actions rather than unrestricted access. Each action should have explicit permissions, validation, audit logs, deterministic fallback paths, and approval gates for high-impact publishing operations. I would also use structured inputs and outputs, evaluate agent behavior against realistic scenarios, and make it easy for users to review, correct, and roll back changes.

Tell us about a time you handled ambiguous requirements for a complex feature.

I would explain the customer problem and desired outcome, identify the highest-risk assumptions, and turn ambiguity into a small set of decisions with trade-offs. I would align stakeholders through a lightweight design document, deliver a narrow first version, and use feedback and telemetry to iterate. This approach keeps progress moving while avoiding costly commitment to unvalidated details.

How do you balance shipping quickly with maintaining quality in a high-ownership engineering environment?

I scope work around the customer outcome and explicitly separate must-have reliability requirements from enhancements that can follow. Before launch, I identify edge cases, operational risks, observability needs, and rollback options, then communicate those trade-offs early. After release, I monitor results, address issues quickly, and convert recurring problems into durable engineering improvements.

About the team:

Builder.io’s Publish engineering team builds the platform that empowers marketing and content teams to launch pages and campaigns using production-grade components, without engineering bottlenecks. This is a full-stack platform engineering team. You will work across the APIs, SDKs, and plugins that power Publish, as well as the visual layer that sits on top of it. The platform must integrate reliably into diverse customer codebases and tech stacks, making backend fluency and API design just as important as frontend craft.

We are moving fast toward agentic Publish workflows, where AI can autonomously create, manage, and ship content experiences, and this team will be at the center of building that future. If you are excited about building scalable platform infrastructure that sits at the intersection of developer tooling, content management, and AI-driven automation, this is the team for you.

As a Senior Software Engineer at Builder.io, you will…

  • Design and build the APIs, and SDKs that power Publish, ensuring they are scalable, well-documented, and reliable for the engineering teams that integrate them into their own codebases.
  • Contribute to the agentic future of Publish, building the backend infrastructure and APIs that will power AI-driven content creation, management, and publishing workflows.
  • Act as a technical bridge between the platform and the customer, translating complex enterprise requirements into scalable solutions and shortening the feedback loop between user pain and feature release.
  • Navigate the complexity of a visual CMS at scale. You are not just shipping features; you are building a platform that must render reliably and integrate seamlessly across wildly diverse customer tech stacks, hosting environments, and design systems.
  • Shape the technical direction of the Publish platform, leading through code reviews, pair programming, and taking proactive ownership of technical debt and quality issues. You will help raise the technical bar through design docs, architectural decisions, and giving substantive feedback on others’ designs.
  • Drive drama-free launches, anticipating edge cases, surfacing risks early, scoping projects to the right balance of effort and value, and delivering work that stands up to scrutiny.

You will thrive in this role if you have…

  • 6+ years of experience in full-stack web development with a proven track record of shipping complex, production-grade features independently.
  • Deep expertise in React and TypeScript/Node.js, with strong instincts for performance, architectural patterns, and the rendering challenges specific to visual editors and component-driven systems.
  • Strong API and backend fluency, including experience designing and building scalable REST or GraphQL APIs, and a genuine interest in the platform and infrastructure layer, not just the UI.
  • Curiosity about AI and agentic systems. You are excited about building products where AI plays an active role in content workflows, and you want to help shape what that looks like in practice.
  • Strong product intuition. You care as much about why you are building something as how, and you are comfortable making product micro-decisions and navigating ambiguity without waiting for perfect requirements.
  • A customer-first mindset. You are comfortable speaking directly with enterprise customers, asking the right questions to uncover root problems, and owning the resolution end-to-end.
  • Cloud fluency. Experience architecting scalable systems on AWS or Google Cloud.
  • High agency. You do not wait for a ticket to be perfectly defined; you seek out the problem, define the solution, and deliver value iteratively.

The items above are a starting point for a conversation, not a hard list of requirements. If this role excites you, we hope you will apply!

The base salary range for this role is €110,000 – €135,000. This role is also eligible for meaningful company equity and benefits.
This position is fully remote and open to candidates in multiple locations. Compensation may vary by country and local market and will be discussed early in the interview process. Final offer amounts are determined based on experience, role-related knowledge, skills, and abilities.
