Sample interview questions
I begin by documenting the close calendar, dependencies, control owners, and recurring bottlenecks. I standardize checklists and reconciliation templates, establish escalation paths, and track close metrics such as timeliness, outstanding reconciling items, and post-close adjustments. This creates accountability while reducing variability among entities.
I use clear journal-entry policies requiring documented business purpose, appropriate support, preparer-reviewer segregation, and approval thresholds based on risk. I also review recurring entries regularly, analyze unusual or late-posted journals, and ensure journals are retained in an auditable workflow.
I establish standardized intercompany account mappings, transaction coding rules, settlement schedules, and ownership for each counterparty relationship. I reconcile balances at both entity and consolidated levels, investigate timing and currency differences promptly, and use aging reports to prevent unresolved balances from carrying across periods.
I would assess the acquired company's chart of accounts, accounting policies, opening balances, close process, systems, and control environment. From there, I would develop a phased conversion plan covering ledger mapping, data validation, policy alignment, reporting requirements, and ownership of post-acquisition close activities.
I first clarify the transaction's economic substance and gather complete contractual and operational facts. I research the applicable accounting guidance, document the conclusion and alternatives considered, consult relevant specialists when needed, and translate the conclusion into journal entries, disclosures, controls, and stakeholder communication.
