Sample interview questions
How would you review a WordPress theme submission before approving it for a marketplace?

I would install it in a clean test environment, verify setup instructions, and test core functionality across supported WordPress and PHP versions. I would assess code organization, responsiveness, accessibility basics, performance, dependency handling, customization options, licensing, and documentation. I would document reproducible issues and distinguish between blocking defects and improvement opportunities using the marketplace standards.

What technical issues would cause you to reject a web-template or code submission?

Blocking issues would include broken core functionality, insecure practices such as unsanitized input handling, malware or obfuscated code, missing required documentation, unsupported or undisclosed dependencies, serious responsiveness or browser-compatibility failures, and intellectual-property concerns. I would also reject assets with poor maintainability, misleading functionality, or insufficient commercial value when they do not meet category standards.

How do you maintain consistency when reviewing a high volume of submissions across different categories?

I use structured checklists aligned to category-specific criteria and record clear evidence for each decision. I calibrate regularly with peers using examples of edge cases, monitor recurring decision patterns, and update guidance when standards or technologies change. This approach keeps decisions objective while allowing appropriate judgment for each asset type.

Describe how you would assess security risk in a PHP or JavaScript marketplace asset.

I would inspect input validation, output escaping, authentication and authorization controls, file-upload handling, database queries, secret management, external requests, and third-party dependencies. I would look for common vulnerabilities such as XSS, SQL injection, insecure direct object references, unsafe deserialization, and outdated packages. Any serious or ambiguous risk would be documented with evidence and escalated through the defined review process.

How would you give constructive feedback to a contributor whose asset is not ready for approval?

I would provide specific, neutral, and actionable feedback tied to the published standards. For example, I would identify the affected file or workflow, explain the customer or technical impact, and state what successful remediation looks like. I would prioritize blocking issues first and avoid subjective language so the contributor can address the feedback efficiently.
