Sample interview questions
I would start by joining refinement and design discussions to identify acceptance criteria, risks, edge cases, and testability requirements before development begins. I would work with developers to define automated checks at the appropriate unit, API, and UI layers, then make quality gates visible in the CI pipeline. I would measure outcomes such as escaped defects and feedback time to refine the approach.
I prioritize stable, high-value user journeys that are repeated frequently and carry meaningful business or regression risk, such as authentication, device ordering, returns, and critical account workflows. I avoid overloading UI suites with cases that are faster and more reliable at the API or unit level. The goal is a balanced test pyramid with fast feedback and maintainable end-to-end coverage.
I first validate the contract, authentication, request and response schemas, error handling, idempotency, and relevant boundary conditions. I create reusable Postman collections with environment variables and assertions, then run them through a command-line runner in CI. Failures should provide clear diagnostics so the team can quickly distinguish between application defects, contract changes, and environment issues.
I would first help establish impact, scope, and reproducibility while ensuring stakeholders receive concise updates. After containment, I would collaborate on root-cause analysis using logs, recent changes, monitoring data, and targeted reproduction tests. I would document corrective actions, including regression coverage and any process or observability improvements needed to prevent recurrence.
I treat test code as production code by using clear abstractions, stable selectors, code review, and regular refactoring. I monitor flaky tests separately, fix root causes rather than repeatedly retrying them, and keep test data and environments predictable. I also review coverage and execution time regularly so the suite remains useful in CI rather than becoming a bottleneck.
