Sample interview questions
I would explain the service boundaries, API contracts, data ownership, resiliency patterns such as retries and idempotency, observability, testing strategy, and deployment approach. I would also quantify outcomes such as improved response times, reduced incidents, or increased throughput where possible.
I begin by reviewing execution plans, query duration, waits, indexes, cardinality estimates, and application access patterns. I then address root causes through query rewrites, appropriate indexing, statistics maintenance, reduced data transfer, and validation under realistic load while monitoring for regressions.
I use clear architectural boundaries, code reviews, linting and formatting, unit tests for business logic, integration tests for APIs and data access, and end-to-end tests for critical user flows. I also incorporate automated checks into CI/CD and monitor production telemetry to identify quality gaps.
I use AI tools to accelerate drafting, refactoring, test generation, documentation, and investigation, but I verify all outputs through code review, tests, security checks, and domain validation. I avoid exposing confidential data and ensure generated code follows team standards and architectural requirements.
I communicate early and clearly using concise written updates that state progress, risks, dependencies, impact, and proposed next steps. During planning and refinement, I clarify acceptance criteria and tradeoffs so that engineering, product, and QA teams can make informed decisions together.
