Sample interview questions
How would you establish a quality strategy across multiple products with both SaaS and customer-managed deployments?

I would begin by mapping critical customer workflows, deployment differences, reliability risks, and existing quality signals. I would define a risk-based test pyramid, consistent release gates, and shared metrics such as escape rate, flaky-test rate, pipeline health, and time to defect detection. I would then prioritize common automation platforms while preserving product-specific coverage where deployment architecture differs.

What metrics would you use to demonstrate that quality engineering is improving delivery outcomes?

I would use a balanced set of leading and lagging indicators: CI pass and stability rates, test execution duration, automation coverage for critical paths, defect escape rate, mean time to detect and resolve issues, rollback frequency, and release lead time. Metrics should be segmented by product and severity, reviewed regularly with engineering and product leadership, and tied to specific improvement actions rather than used as isolated scorecards.

How do you reduce flaky tests and improve CI reliability?

I would first instrument failures to distinguish product defects, environmental issues, test-data problems, and nondeterministic test behavior. The team would establish ownership, quarantine policies with expiration dates, reliability SLAs, and a prioritized backlog for eliminating flakes. I would also improve isolation, deterministic test data, environment provisioning, and parallelization so the pipeline becomes both trustworthy and fast.

How would you introduce AI-developed tests and agentic workflows responsibly?

I would start with controlled use cases such as test-case generation, failure clustering, and regression-test selection, while retaining human review for test quality and risk-sensitive coverage. We would measure generated-test value through defect discovery, maintainability, execution reliability, and false-positive rates. Clear guardrails for data access, code review, reproducibility, and observability would ensure automation accelerates quality without weakening engineering accountability.

Describe how you would lead and grow a remote-first SDET team.

I would set clear outcomes, ownership boundaries, technical standards, and operating rhythms while giving engineers autonomy in execution. Regular one-on-ones, transparent roadmaps, design reviews, mentoring plans, and cross-functional demos would keep the team connected and visible. I would develop engineers through stretch ownership in automation architecture, quality metrics, incident analysis, and partnerships with product engineering.
