Sample interview questions
How would you establish control over APAC tax compliance during a fixed-term engagement?

I would first create a country-by-country compliance calendar, risk register, and ownership matrix covering filings, payments, documentation, advisers, and open issues. I would then prioritize overdue, high-risk, and material items, set a concise reporting cadence, and implement escalation procedures with local finance and global tax stakeholders.

Describe your approach to advising on a new product or commercial structure across multiple APAC jurisdictions.

I start by mapping the transaction flows, legal entities, counterparties, revenue streams, and operational substance. I assess direct, indirect, withholding, transfer-pricing, and regulatory implications by jurisdiction, then present practical structuring options with clear risk, cost, and implementation trade-offs.

How would you manage a tax audit or dispute involving a local APAC tax authority?

I would centralize the factual record, validate the technical position, preserve key deadlines, and align internal stakeholders and local counsel on a response strategy. My approach is to maintain a constructive authority relationship while rigorously documenting the company position, quantifying exposures, and escalating settlement or litigation decisions appropriately.

What tax risks are particularly important for a digital-asset business operating in APAC?

Important risks include changing classification and sourcing rules for digital-asset activities, indirect-tax treatment, withholding taxes, permanent-establishment exposure, transfer pricing, and reporting obligations. I would maintain a regulatory horizon-scanning process and translate developments into operational controls and decision-ready guidance.

How do you work effectively with global teams while operating remotely and independently?

I establish clear decision rights, concise written updates, agreed response times, and a predictable stakeholder cadence. I focus on making issues actionable by communicating the tax position, commercial impact, required decision, owner, and deadline in a format that senior and operational teams can use.
