Sample interview questions
How have you standardized payroll operations across countries with different providers and statutory requirements?

I begin with a global control framework that defines common data standards, payroll calendars, approval workflows, reconciliation requirements, and service-level metrics. I then document country-specific statutory variations, establish governance with each provider, and use regular KPI reviews and exception reporting to drive consistent execution without overlooking local obligations.

Describe your approach to managing payroll risks related to equity compensation, such as RSUs and ESPPs.

I partner closely with Equity Administration, Tax, HR, and Accounting to map each equity event to payroll and withholding requirements by jurisdiction. I establish clear data-transfer deadlines, validate taxable income and withholding calculations, reconcile payroll outputs to equity records, and maintain documented controls and audit evidence.

What metrics would you use to evaluate a global payroll managed-services partner?

I would track on-time and accurate payroll completion, error and off-cycle rates, SLA attainment, response and resolution times, filing timeliness, compliance incidents, root-cause trends, employee inquiry outcomes, and implementation milestones. Quarterly business reviews should convert these metrics into accountable improvement plans and escalation decisions.

How would you prepare the payroll function for a new-country launch or acquisition?

I would create a cross-functional implementation plan covering entity or EOR selection, registrations, local tax and benefit requirements, banking and funding, worker data, vendor configuration, payroll calendars, controls, and employee communications. Before go-live, I would run parallel validations where possible and define heightened post-launch monitoring and escalation ownership.

Tell us how you lead a distributed payroll team during periods of rapid change.

I set clear ownership, operating rhythms, and measurable standards while ensuring team members understand how their work affects employees and compliance. I use regular one-on-ones, structured escalation paths, training plans, and transparent communication to maintain engagement, develop capability, and keep critical work moving during system, provider, or organizational changes.
