Sample interview questions
I would first clarify the business decision the dashboard must support, the target audience, required KPIs, refresh expectations, and source systems. Then I would profile the data, define metric logic with stakeholders, create an appropriate star-schema model, build and validate measures, and iterate on a simple user-focused report design before publishing and documenting it.
Power Query is primarily used during data preparation to connect, clean, reshape, and combine data before it enters the model. DAX is used after loading data to create calculated columns, measures, and time-intelligence calculations that respond to report filter context. I use Power Query for repeatable transformations and DAX for analytical calculations and report behavior.
I would confirm that both reports use the same metric definition, date range, filters, refresh time, and grain of data. Next, I would trace the Power BI query and model relationships, compare record counts and sample records, and test the DAX measure in a simplified table. Once the root cause is confirmed, I would correct the transformation, relationship, or measure and document the agreed business logic.
I would favor a star schema, remove unnecessary columns and rows early in Power Query, use appropriate data types, and avoid high-cardinality fields where possible. I would also prefer measures over excessive calculated columns, keep DAX efficient, configure incremental refresh when applicable, and review performance using Power BI performance tools.
I would begin with the business implication rather than the technical method, using a concise visual and a clear recommendation. I would explain the metric definition, key trend, likely drivers, and any limitations in plain language, then invite questions and provide supporting detail only as needed. This keeps the discussion focused on an actionable decision while maintaining transparency about the data.
