About this role.
Spire seeks a senior, quota-carrying Sales Manager to grow weather, climate, and Earth-intelligence data solutions across the Americas. The role focuses especially on financial-market buyers, including trading desks and quantitative funds, and U.S. utilities, independent power producers, and grid operators. The manager will independently build the territory, generate and manage pipeline, run consultative sales cycles, deliver proposals, negotiate commercial terms, and exceed quota. Candidates need at least eight years of data, SaaS, or API sales experience, domain credibility in financial and energy markets, and the ability to communicate with technical and executive stakeholders.

Sample interview questions
I would segment the territory by ideal customer profile, prioritizing trading and utility accounts with clear weather-sensitive decisions and a defined data-buying process. I would map stakeholders, identify partner-led and direct paths to market, establish account-level opportunity hypotheses, and run a weekly pipeline cadence tied to coverage, conversion, and forecast quality.
I would begin by understanding the specific decision process, asset classes, current data sources, latency and historical-data requirements, and how the team validates new signals. I would then position Spire around a testable use case, coordinate a technical evaluation with clear success metrics, and build the commercial case around differentiated insight, faster decisions, or improved risk management.
I would avoid a generic replacement pitch and first identify gaps in forecast accuracy, granularity, renewable integration, severe-weather response, or service reliability. I would engage operations, forecasting, procurement, and executive stakeholders to define a targeted pilot or comparative evaluation, then quantify the operational value of improvement before proposing a phased commercial rollout.
I use defined stage exit criteria, documented customer commitments, stakeholder mapping, next steps, and realistic close dates rather than relying on seller optimism. I review pipeline health regularly, identify deal risks early, and maintain clear best-case, commit, and upside views that allow leadership to understand both forecast confidence and required actions.
I take ownership of account strategy and commercial execution while creating concise, actionable feedback loops for internal partners. I involve specialists early when technical validation or customer outcomes require them, share market intelligence in a structured way, and ensure that every cross-functional interaction has a clear customer objective and accountable next step.
The Opportunity:
We are seeking an ambitious, self-directed Sales Manager to accelerate revenue growth across the Americas and advance the digitization of the global weather and climate ecosystem. Operating with the autonomy of a regional owner, you will expand Spire’s market presence across key industry segments, leverage our partner ecosystem to drive adoption of our forecast data, APIs, and decision-support solutions, and consistently exceed sales targets.
Two segments sit at the center of this territory. The first is the financial sector — energy and commodity trading desks, hedge funds, and quantitative investment firms that treat weather as a tradable signal and buy differentiated data to sharpen their edge. The second is the U.S. electric utility and power market: the investor-owned utilities, public power authorities, independent power producers, and grid operators who generate electricity and keep the grid balanced, and for whom forecast accuracy translates directly into load planning, renewable generation, outage response, and reliability.
This is a high-impact, quota-carrying role for a seller who is energized by how data and software are reshaping traditional industries — and who wants to sell a product that is, quite literally, powered by space.
What You’ll Do:
- Own a territory: Build and execute a territory plan spanning the Americas — from Canada and the United States through Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and South America— identifying and developing new business opportunities while growing and retaining existing client accounts.
- Lead with our priority segments: Drive growth in the financial sector — engaging traders, portfolio managers, quantitative researchers, and heads of data at trading houses, hedge funds, and asset managers — and across U.S. utilities, IPPs, and grid operators, where you will position Spire’s forecasts against load forecasting, renewable generation, and grid reliability use cases.
- Exceed targets: Meet and surpass assigned quotas through disciplined prospecting, qualification, and full-cycle deal execution.
- Build lasting relationships: Develop strong, long-term relationships with key clients, partners, and stakeholders across the weather, climate, and earth intelligence ecosystem — understanding their needs, challenges, and objectives to tailor solutions accordingly.
- Sell consultatively: Use a solution-selling approach to uncover clients’ operational pain points and propose tailored offerings built on Spire’s weather forecasts, historical data, and climate analytics.
- Master the product: Develop deep expertise in Spire’s data products and platforms — their features, differentiation, and applications — to communicate compelling value to technical and executive audiences alike.
- Deliver winning proposals: Prepare and present persuasive sales presentations, proposals, and responses to tenders that clearly articulate Spire’s value proposition.
- Negotiate and close: Lead commercial negotiations on terms and pricing to reach mutually beneficial agreements and close deals reliably.
- Manage your pipeline: Maintain an accurate, up-to-date pipeline in our CRM, ensuring rigorous forecasting and timely follow-up on every lead and opportunity.
- Know the market: Track industry trends, competitive movements, and emerging opportunities across your regions to inform strategy and identify new areas for growth.
- Collaborate cross-functionally: Partner with marketing, product, meteorology, and customer success teams to ensure client satisfaction and feed market insight back into product development.
Basic Skills/Qualifications:
- 8+ years of experience in sales, business development, or account management, with a focus on selling data products, SaaS, or API-based solutions.
- A demonstrated track record of consistently meeting or exceeding sales targets and quotas.
- Strong understanding of the weather and climate industry, or deep experience selling digital transformation into data-driven sectors such as financial markets, power and energy, maritime, aviation, agriculture, or logistics.
- Proven success selling data, analytics, or alternative data into the financial sector — commodity, power, or weather derivatives trading desks, hedge funds, or quantitative funds — with the credibility to hold a technical conversation with traders, quants, and research leads and to navigate data-procurement and evaluation processes.
- Experience selling into United States electric utilities, independent power producers, or grid operators — with a working understanding of how weather drives generation, load
- forecasting, renewable integration, outage and storm response, and grid reliability, and of how utility and public-power procurement cycles work.
- A consultative, value-based selling style with excellent communication, presentation, and negotiation skills.
- Proven ability to build and maintain trusted client relationships across cultures, time zones, and seniority levels.
- Proficiency with modern sales tools (e.g., Salesforce or similar CRM, LinkedIn Sales Navigator, ZoomInfo, Lusha).
- Self-motivated, results-oriented, and effective working independently in a remote, globally distributed team.
- Fluent in English; willingness to travel across the territory as needed.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience, preferably in a high-tech field.
- Legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future visa sponsorship.
Preferred Skills/Qualifications:
- Additional language skills relevant to the Americas — Spanish, Portuguese, or French — are a strong plus, though not required.
- An existing network within meteorology, earth observation, or climate-tech communities.
- Familiarity with U.S. power market structure and the ISOs/RTOs — PJM, ERCOT, MISO, CAISO, SPP, NYISO, ISO-NE — or with FERC and NERC reliability requirements.
- An established network on trading floors or among alternative-data buyers at hedge funds and quantitative investment firms.
- Experience selling to or partnering with government agencies, national met services, or large enterprises in regulated industries.
