Sample interview questions
I begin by assessing the close calendar, control environment, team structure, systems, and key process bottlenecks. I then establish clear ownership and service-level expectations, prioritize high-risk reconciliations and reporting dependencies, and sequence automation initiatives to improve both speed and control quality.
I focus on revenue recognition, settlement and cash reconciliation, processor fees, reserves, chargebacks, funds-flow completeness, and the proper presentation of gross versus net revenue. I also ensure robust controls around system interfaces, exception management, and reconciliations between operational and general-ledger data.
I use a documented close calendar with accountable owners, standardized reconciliations, materiality thresholds, and recurring variance reviews. I measure close performance, address root causes of late or manual work, and automate repeatable workflows while preserving review controls and audit trails.
I provide decision-useful reporting, maintain audit-ready documentation, and ensure controls, accounting policies, and key reconciliations can withstand diligence. I partner early with legal, tax, FP&A, finance systems, and outside advisors to identify issues before they become transaction risks.
I set explicit outcomes, decision rights, and operating cadences for each functional leader, supported by a small set of meaningful metrics. I combine regular coaching and succession planning with transparent performance expectations so leaders can own results while escalating risks early.
