Sample interview questions
How would you investigate a significant data-quality discrepancy in a client deliverable?

I would first quantify the discrepancy, identify the affected dimensions and time periods, and compare the output with prior validated results. I would trace the issue through source ingestion, transformation logic, classification rules, and aggregation steps, documenting hypotheses and findings. After validating the root cause, I would implement a fix, back-test it, add a preventive QA check, and clearly explain the impact and remediation to stakeholders.

Describe how you would use SQL and Python together to validate a large consumer-data product.

I would use SQL for scalable exploration, reconciliation, and aggregation directly in the warehouse or Databricks environment. Python would support deeper statistical checks, anomaly detection, sampling analysis, reusable validation scripts, and visual investigation. I would automate the key checks and maintain clear thresholds, alerts, and documentation so the process is repeatable.

How do you communicate a dataset’s methodological limitations to a nontechnical client?

I begin with the client decision the data will inform, then state what the dataset reliably measures before explaining the key limitations in plain language. I use concrete examples, quantify potential impact when possible, and distinguish between observed facts and estimates. I also offer practical guidance on how to use the data appropriately alongside complementary sources.

Tell us about a time you improved an inefficient data workflow.

I would describe the original bottleneck, such as a manual reconciliation or recurring transformation failure, and establish its operational and quality impact. I would then map the process, automate repeatable steps, introduce validation checkpoints, and measure improvements in turnaround time and error rates. Finally, I would document the workflow and share standards with peers to make the improvement durable.

How do you prioritize multiple urgent requests from clients and internal teams?

I assess each request by client impact, data-risk severity, deadline, dependencies, and the effort required to reach a reliable result. I communicate trade-offs early, align priorities with the relevant leads, and break work into milestones so urgent risk can be addressed first. I keep stakeholders updated on status, assumptions, and any changes that may affect delivery timing or quality.
