Sample interview questions
How would you approach assessing personal income tax and social-security exposure for a worker in a new country?

I would begin by confirming the worker’s employment arrangement, residency, work location, compensation components, and relevant employer presence. I would then review local income-tax withholding, social-security, reporting, and treaty considerations, document the risk assessment, and align on implementation steps with payroll and legal stakeholders.

Describe how you would explain a complex cross-border tax issue to a non-tax client or internal partner.

I would first identify the business decision that needs to be made, then explain the issue in plain language using a concise summary of the risk, available options, and recommended action. I would avoid unnecessary technical jargon while providing supporting detail and documentation for stakeholders who need it.

What factors would you consider when evaluating tax-efficient salary packages and benefits across countries?

I would consider local income-tax treatment, employer and employee social-security costs, payroll withholding obligations, benefit taxation, equity treatment, reporting requirements, and employee experience. I would also assess operational feasibility so that recommendations can be implemented consistently and compliantly through payroll.

How do you manage several urgent advisory requests while maintaining quality and accuracy?

I triage requests based on compliance risk, employee impact, deadlines, and business urgency. I define the required facts and owners early, maintain a documented tracker, communicate expected turnaround times, and use standardized resources for recurring questions while escalating novel or high-risk issues appropriately.

How have you used data or automation to improve a tax or finance process?

I would use structured data to identify recurring questions, jurisdictional patterns, missing documentation, and process bottlenecks. From there, I would build reusable templates, decision trees, or automated reporting workflows, validate outputs with subject-matter review, and monitor results to ensure the process remains accurate as regulations change.
