Sample interview questions
How do you approach an HTS classification review when product information is incomplete?

I begin by collecting the product's technical description, specifications, function, components, end use, and supplier documentation. I compare those facts against the HTSUS language and relevant interpretive guidance, document the rationale and assumptions, and escalate uncertain or high-risk classifications for expert review before use.

What steps would you take when a restricted-party screening produces a potential match?

I would pause the affected transaction, verify the identity details against the screening result, and review the customer, end user, destination, end use, and transaction structure for additional red flags. I would document the review, seek guidance from the compliance lead or legal counsel, and would not release the transaction until the match is resolved and any required authorization is confirmed.

How have you coordinated with customs brokers or freight forwarders to resolve an import issue?

I provide the broker with complete, consistent commercial documentation and product information, then track the request through resolution. For discrepancies involving classification, value, origin, or entry data, I validate the underlying records with procurement and suppliers, communicate the corrected information clearly, and retain the final documentation for auditability.

What factors do you evaluate during an export-control review under EAR or ITAR?

I gather facts about the item or technology, applicable classification, destination, end user, end use, intermediate parties, and transaction structure. I then evaluate licensing requirements, sanctions and restricted-party concerns, end-use restrictions, and any available license exceptions or authorizations, escalating decisions that require legal or empowered-official review.

How do you manage multiple urgent shipping and compliance requests without sacrificing accuracy?

I triage requests based on shipment deadlines, regulatory risk, and missing-information dependencies. I maintain a documented tracker, use checklists for recurring reviews, communicate expected turnaround times to stakeholders, and escalate blockers early so that urgent transactions are addressed without bypassing required controls.
