Sample interview questions
I would begin with a structured risk assessment covering key products, technologies, competitors, existing claims, and likely areas of exposure. I would prioritize matters based on legal merits, business impact, precedent risk, cost, and product velocity, then create clear decision frameworks for leadership. The strategy would combine defensive readiness, selective enforcement, portfolio development, and regular alignment with product and engineering roadmaps.
I would first establish the relevant facts, technical workflow, rights chain, applicable statutory framework, and litigation posture. I would coordinate closely with product, engineering, policy, and communications teams to identify practical mitigation options while preserving defensible legal positions. I would then present leadership with concise scenarios that distinguish legal exposure from business, reputational, and operational risk.
I evaluate claim strength, available defenses, injunction risk, damages exposure, customer and platform impact, cost, timing, and strategic precedent. I also assess whether a product change is technically feasible and whether settlement or licensing could create undesirable future obligations. My recommendation would compare these options in business terms, not only legal terms, and identify the decision owner and timeline.
I set clear objectives, budgets, staffing expectations, reporting cadence, and escalation criteria at the outset. I expect counsel to provide practical options and decision-ready analysis rather than only legal summaries. I actively manage case strategy, discovery priorities, expert selection, and spend so that outside counsel operates as an extension of the internal legal team.
I would tailor the discussion to the audience and explain the issue through the affected product behavior, likely outcomes, confidence level, and concrete decisions required. For executives, I would focus on material business tradeoffs, cost, timing, and reputation; for engineers, I would translate the legal theory into actionable technical constraints or design alternatives. In both cases, I would avoid unnecessary legal jargon and document clear next steps.
