Sample interview questions
How would you approach drafting a new event-contract specification for a regulated exchange?

I would first identify the underlying event, settlement source, market rules, participant obligations, and relevant CFTC requirements. I would then create clear definitions, objective settlement criteria, disclosure language, risk allocation, and governance provisions, validating the draft with Product, Risk, Compliance, and operational stakeholders before finalizing it.

Describe how you translate a complex regulatory requirement for a non-legal team.

I start with the business objective and explain the regulatory requirement in plain language, focusing on what the team must do, why it matters, and the consequences of noncompliance. I provide a concise written checklist or decision framework and remain available to resolve edge cases as the product or process is implemented.

What contract-lifecycle improvements would you prioritize in a growing financial-markets company?

I would standardize high-volume templates and clause libraries, establish approval thresholds, create a central repository with version controls, and track key obligations and renewal dates. I would also identify recurring negotiation points that can be addressed through preapproved fallback language or workflow automation.

How would you balance speed to launch with legal and regulatory precision?

I would separate non-negotiable regulatory and risk requirements from areas where the business has flexibility, then communicate that distinction early. Using standardized documentation, clear escalation paths, and risk-ranked reviews enables the team to move quickly without compromising core compliance obligations.

How would you handle a disagreement between Product and Compliance about a proposed market structure?

I would clarify the factual assumptions, identify the applicable legal and regulatory constraints, and frame the issue in terms of specific risks and available alternatives. My goal would be to facilitate a practical solution that preserves the product objective where possible while ensuring the structure is defensible, documented, and compliant.
