Sample interview questions
I begin by mapping the close calendar, dependencies, reconciliations, journal entries, and review controls. I then measure recurring bottlenecks, standardize support schedules, automate repeatable data preparation where controls permit, and track close duration and post-close adjustments to verify improvement.
I would identify a high-volume, rules-based process such as AP coding, expense review, or reconciliation preparation, document the approval and exception requirements, and automate the routine steps through an integrated workflow. I retain human approval for material, unusual, or policy-sensitive items and validate results through exception reports and periodic reconciliations.
Each reconciliation should clearly state the account purpose, tie the ending balance to the general ledger, identify the source support, explain reconciling items, assign an owner, and show reviewer sign-off. I maintain consistent documentation and promptly investigate aging or unexplained reconciling items.
I assess data quality, materiality, repeatability, system access, privacy, and the level of judgment required. AI can be useful for drafting analyses, classifying routine information, and flagging anomalies, but final accounting conclusions, approvals, and sensitive exceptions should remain subject to defined human review controls.
I would translate the finance problem into clear requirements: the source data, desired output, business rules, exception paths, owner, and success metric. I would work iteratively with Engineering, test outputs against the GL and supporting records, document controls, and monitor the workflow after launch.
At NetBox Labs, we’re building the future of network automation. We are looking for an accounting professional with a finance engineer’s mindset — someone who owns core accounting operations while using AI and automation to make Finance more accurate, efficient, and scalable.
This is a hands-on, high-ownership role responsible for the month-end close, accounts payable, expenses, reconciliations, and audit readiness. You’ll identify manual processes, build practical automations, and partner across the organization to improve how work gets done. Automation is the throughline across everything you do. This role is ideal for someone with deep SaaS experience who takes pride in getting the numbers right.
What You’ll Do
• Own the month-end close, including journal entries, account reconciliations, flux analysis, and supporting schedules
• Own accounts payable, employee reimbursements, and corporate card programs, ensuring accurate coding and timely month-end accruals
• Prepare and maintain balance sheet reconciliations with clear supporting documentation
• Partner with the Controller to continuously improve and automate the month-end close by identifying bottlenecks and designing AI-powered workflows that increase accuracy, efficiency, and scalability.
• Evaluate emerging AI, automation, and Finance technology solutions, recommend improvements, and lead implementation where appropriate
• Work cross-functionally with Engineering and other teams to identify automation opportunities, connect systems, and eliminate manual processes across Finance.
• Support budgeting, forecasting, reporting, and ad hoc projects as needed
• Support audit readiness by preparing audit schedules, maintaining documentation, coordinating auditor requests, and helping ensure ongoing compliance.
• Take ownership of ad hoc special projects that improve how Finance operates
What You’ll Bring
• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including close ownership in a dynamic startup SaaS or startup software environment
• Strong knowledge of accounting fundamentals and high attention to detail
• Proven experience using AI tools (e.g., Claude, ChatGPT) in your current role and comfort picking up new automation tools quickly (e.g., n8n, Zapier)
• A finance engineer’s mindset: you build scalable processes that reduce work and increase accuracy for all stakeholders
• Strong judgement regarding which activities should be automated and which require human review
• Experience leading or supporting a financial audit
• Proficiency in QuickBooks Online, Rillet, or a similar GL/ERP system
• Experience managing AP, expense, or corporate card programs (Ramp or similar) is preferred
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA a plus but not required
