Sample interview questions
Describe a facilities turnaround or reliability improvement you led across one or more sites.

I would explain the initial operational gaps using baseline metrics such as PM completion, downtime, work-order aging, safety findings, and vendor SLAs. I would then describe implementing clear ownership, preventive-maintenance schedules, escalation routines, scorecards, and regular reviews, followed by measurable improvements in uptime, compliance, and cost control.

How do you ensure a new warehouse or office is operationally ready at handoff, rather than simply construction-complete?

I use an operational-readiness checklist covering life safety, permits, utilities, HVAC, electrical capacity, security, IT/network readiness, equipment commissioning, vendor coverage, spare parts, training, and emergency procedures. I assign owners and due dates for every readiness item, validate completion through site walkthroughs and testing, and do not accept handoff until critical risks are closed or formally mitigated.

How would you prioritize competing facilities capital requests across multiple warehouse locations?

I would evaluate requests against safety and compliance exposure, business continuity risk, operational capacity, ROI, lease obligations, and strategic growth needs. A transparent scoring model and multi-year capital plan help leaders understand tradeoffs, while urgent life-safety or production risks receive immediate attention.

How do you manage underperforming maintenance, janitorial, security, or construction vendors?

I establish defined scopes, service-level expectations, reporting requirements, and measurable scorecards at the start of the relationship. If performance falls short, I review root causes with the vendor, create a corrective-action plan with deadlines, monitor progress closely, and escalate or competitively source alternatives when commitments are not met.

Give an example of how you would handle a significant safety or building-system risk discovered at a site.

I would first protect people and operations by isolating the hazard, engaging qualified internal or external experts, and ensuring required notifications or inspections occur. Then I would document the risk, assign corrective actions, communicate status to affected stakeholders, verify remediation, and update preventive-maintenance or inspection processes to prevent recurrence.
