Sample interview questions
I would begin with a structured discovery conversation covering the business objective, current state, desired outcomes, scope, stakeholders, timeline, budget parameters, and success measures. I would then translate the findings into a concise role brief that specifies the required consulting capabilities, relevant industry context, deliverables, commitment level, and selection criteria, validating the brief with the client before sourcing.
I would assess fit across three dimensions: capability, context, and collaboration. In addition to functional expertise and project history, I would evaluate experience with the client’s industry and problem type, availability and engagement constraints, communication style, and ability to work effectively with the client’s stakeholders. I would present the client with evidence-based reasons for the recommendation and any tradeoffs.
I would quickly gather facts separately from both parties, clarify expectations against the agreed scope and deliverables, and identify whether the issue involves communication, capability, availability, or changing business needs. I would facilitate an objective resolution plan with owners and deadlines, document the outcome, and involve the appropriate internal teams when escalation or a replacement is needed.
I would prioritize based on business impact, client deadlines, engagement complexity, likelihood of a timely match, and risks to existing engagements. I would create clear next actions for each request, communicate realistic timelines early, and use the talent network and internal partners efficiently so urgent work progresses without losing visibility into other commitments.
Consulting experience develops the ability to structure ambiguous problems, ask incisive questions, synthesize information quickly, and communicate recommendations to senior stakeholders. It also provides practical understanding of consulting workstreams, deliverables, and team dynamics, enabling me to evaluate consultant capability credibly and align talent with the client’s actual business need.
