Sample interview questions
How would you investigate a traffic-routing incident affecting an anycast service across multiple points of presence?

I would first establish scope using user-impact, latency, reachability, and traffic telemetry by region and ASN. I would inspect BGP announcements, path changes, route preference, peer health, and capacity at affected POPs, then compare against a known-good region. After mitigating through routing adjustments, capacity actions, or controlled withdrawal where appropriate, I would document the timeline, root cause, and preventive monitoring or automation improvements.

Describe how you would safely automate a network change using Python and CI/CD practices.

I would define the desired state and validation rules, store the change in version control, and use code review plus automated linting and tests. The automation should validate inventory and pre-change device state, apply changes in a controlled rollout, verify routing and service health afterward, and support a tested rollback path. I would also ensure logs, approvals, and change results are retained for auditability and incident analysis.

What BGP signals and conditions would you examine when diagnosing unexpected traffic shifts?

I would examine advertised prefixes, AS paths, local preference, MEDs where relevant, communities, RPKI status, route flap history, peer sessions, and upstream announcements. I would correlate these with NetFlow or sampled flow data, edge utilization, packet loss, and latency to distinguish control-plane changes from capacity or data-plane problems. I would also check whether route filtering, prefix limits, or a maintenance event altered reachability.

How would you design monitoring for network performance from the end-user perspective?

I would combine infrastructure telemetry with active and passive measurements. This includes availability probes, DNS resolution time, TCP connection success, TLS timing, HTTP latency, packet loss, retransmissions, route changes, and flow-level traffic patterns segmented by geography, network, POP, and customer service. Alerts should be tied to meaningful error budgets and baselines so responders can prioritize real user impact over isolated device noise.

How do you balance urgent incident response with long-term reliability engineering work?

During an incident, I prioritize restoring user impact safely, communicate status clearly, and preserve evidence for later analysis. Afterward, I translate recurring incidents and manual operational tasks into prioritized reliability work such as better telemetry, runbooks, capacity planning, safeguards, and automation. I use impact, frequency, risk reduction, and engineering effort to make the roadmap visible and to align priorities with partner teams.
