Sample interview questions
How would you create an account plan for a high-value enterprise customer with both renewal risk and expansion potential?

I would start with product-usage, commercial, stakeholder, and support data to identify the customer’s business objectives, adoption gaps, renewal risks, and expansion hypotheses. I would map decision-makers and champions, align internal owners to a mutual action plan, define measurable outcomes, and establish an executive QBR cadence. The plan would include clear milestones, risk mitigations, forecast confidence, and a value narrative tied to the customer's priorities.

Describe how you would use product data to identify an expansion opportunity in an API-first payments platform.

I would examine adoption by product, transaction volume, gateway or payment-method coverage, authorization performance, and workflow usage against the customer’s stated business goals. A gap such as expansion into new markets, failed-payment recovery, fraud orchestration, or underused routing capabilities could indicate a value-led opportunity. I would validate the hypothesis with customer stakeholders, quantify expected business impact, and build a jointly owned business case.

How do you manage a renewal when several customer stakeholders have competing priorities?

I map each stakeholder’s influence, objectives, and concerns, then establish a shared success narrative grounded in outcomes and measurable platform value. I address risks early through separate working sessions where necessary, while maintaining an executive-level mutual plan that clarifies decisions, owners, and timing. If priorities conflict, I frame options around business impact and escalate internally only with a clear recommendation.

What methods do you use to forecast retention and expansion accurately?

I combine CRM hygiene with leading indicators such as stakeholder engagement, usage trends, support sentiment, product fit, contract timing, budget cycles, and progress against a mutual action plan. I document risks and next steps consistently, assign realistic probability based on evidence rather than optimism, and review forecast changes regularly with cross-functional partners. This approach makes both the forecast and required interventions actionable.

Tell us about a time you influenced an internal team to resolve a customer issue that was affecting commercial outcomes.

In a comparable situation, I translated the customer issue into a concise business case covering revenue risk, customer impact, evidence, and recommended options. I brought together the relevant product, support, and technical stakeholders, created clear ownership and checkpoints, and kept the customer informed without overpromising. The resulting resolution restored confidence, protected the relationship, and created a stronger foundation for renewal or growth.

About Us:

Spreedly is the world’s leading Open Payments Platform. Founded in 2007 and headquartered in Durham, NC, the company gives mid-market and enterprise businesses the infrastructure to connect to any payment gateway, processor, or fraud tool through a single API. The platform is vendor-agnostic by design, meaning customers are never locked into a single provider and never need to rebuild their payments stack to access new capabilities.

The core business problem Spreedly solves is real and costly: global merchants face a fragmented payments ecosystem, where every new market, payment method, or fraud tool typically requires a separate, time-consuming integration. Spreedly eliminates that complexity, enabling companies to route transactions intelligently, secure cardholder data, prevent fraud, and expand into new markets without heavy engineering overhead.

Additional Information

Spreedly Product Offering:

Spreedly provides an open payments platform. The platform’s connectivity provides payments performance. Key products and services include:

Connect — A unified API that integrates with hundreds of payment gateways, processors, and alternative payment methods worldwide, including digital wallets. Merchants access the global payments ecosystem through one connection.
Vault — A PCI-compliant secure repository for payment methods. Merchants store card data once and reuse it across any payment service, reducing PCI scope and protecting cardholder data at scale.
Optimize — Workflow-driven routing and retry logic that directs each transaction to the best-performing gateway in real time. On average, 7.9% of failed transactions succeed immediately when retried on a secondary gateway. This is where merchants recover lost revenue and increase authorization success rates.
Protect — A flexible fraud and authentication layer, incorporating advanced fraud tools and 3DS. Following Spreedly’s acquisition of Dodgeball in September 2025, fraud orchestration and payment optimization now operate within the same platform.
Resolve — Centralized management and reporting that reduces operational silos, strengthens security, and improves billing control across a merchant’s entire payment operation.
