About this role.
This senior Database Support Engineer role provides advanced technical support for Supabase users working with PostgreSQL and the broader Supabase platform. The engineer will diagnose complex database, migration, performance, authentication, storage, realtime, and distributed-system issues; create reproducible bug reports; and partner closely with engineering. The position also includes proactive technical guidance, identifying product and documentation gaps, and mentoring junior support staff. It is a fully remote, full-time role restricted to APAC time zones and operates in a fast-moving, asynchronous environment. Strong PostgreSQL internals knowledge, SQL performance tuning, cloud/Linux fluency, and clear customer communication are central to success.

Sample interview questions
I would first establish the timing and scope, then inspect replication slots, long-running transactions, archival or replication health, and workload changes. I would use PostgreSQL monitoring and catalog queries to identify blockers, explain the findings in customer-friendly terms, propose a safe mitigation, and provide an engineering-ready reproduction or escalation if the behavior indicates a product defect.
I would collect the query, parameters, schema change details, relevant table sizes, and EXPLAIN ANALYZE output. I would compare execution plans, evaluate indexes, statistics freshness, joins, row-estimation errors, locks, and transaction behavior, then recommend the lowest-risk fix such as an index, query revision, or statistics update.
I ask targeted questions to establish expected versus actual behavior, timestamps, project configuration, minimal reproduction steps, errors, logs, and recent changes. I then validate the issue in an isolated environment where possible and document impact, scope, evidence, reproduction steps, and attempted mitigations so engineering can begin efficiently.
I would avoid making irreversible changes before assessing the migration history, current schema, backups, affected application versions, and transaction state. I would identify the divergence, create a tested recovery plan using a staging copy when possible, communicate risks and rollback options, and guide the customer through a controlled repair and verification.
I would triage by customer impact, urgency, and incident signals, while using reusable diagnostic checklists and templates for common issue types. I would communicate early with clear status updates, prioritize safe mitigations for high-impact cases, and reserve deep investigation time for novel or systemic issues while documenting patterns for future improvements.
About Supabase
Supabase is the Postgres development platform, built by developers for developers. We provide a complete backend solution including Database, Auth, Storage, Edge Functions, Realtime, and Vector Search. All services are deeply integrated and designed for growth.
About the Role
We’re looking for an experienced Database Support Engineer to join our Support Team and help developers unblock complex issues, build more reliably, and get the most out of the Supabase platform. You’ll work closely with customers and engineering, helping us improve product quality and developer experience based on real-world usage.
This role is ideal for someone who thrives in async, fast-paced environments and is excited about building developer tools that scale to millions.
What You’ll Be Responsible For
In this role, you’ll:
Resolve Technical Issues: Investigate and resolve advanced customer issues across Postgres, Auth, RLS, Storage, Realtime, Edge Functions, and client libraries.
Provide Consultative Advice: Offer proactive guidance to optimize workloads, avoid common pitfalls, and provide tailored advice to our most advanced users.
Bridge the Gap to Engineering: Reproduce bugs, isolate root causes, propose workarounds, and escalate to engineering with solid reproduction steps.
Investigate Deeply: Ask smart, targeted questions that turn incomplete reports into actionable cases.
Communicate Effectively: Communicate clearly and empathetically with users of all levels—especially during high-impact or time-sensitive situations.
Drive Product Improvement: Spot patterns across tickets and recommend improvements to documentation, tooling, and the product itself.
Mentor and Lead: Mentor junior team members and help raise the overall bar for support quality.
You Might Be a Good Fit If
Experience: You have 7+ years in technical support, databases, backend engineering, SRE, or similar roles.
Postgres Expertise: You know PostgreSQL deeply—including autovacuum behavior, WAL growth, long-running transactions, table bloat, and other internals.
Query Optimization: You’re strong in high-performance SQL and query optimization.
Troubleshooting Skills: You’re comfortable troubleshooting complex setups, including multi-tenant schema patterns and distributed system behavior.
Migration Knowledge: You’ve handled data migration issues (pg_dump/restore, schema drift, failed migrations) and know how to recover safely.
Technical Stack: You have hands-on experience with cloud hosting providers like AWS and are comfortable in terminal/Linux environments.
Operational Mindset: You thrive in high-volume situations and can form and test assumptions quickly.
Timezones & Logistics
Type: Full-time position.
Location: This role requires a location within APAC time zones (we do not believe in the sustainability of overnight shifts).
