Sample interview questions
I use documented payroll calendars, validation checklists, maker-checker controls, and pre-payment reconciliations. I verify payroll inputs against approved source data, investigate variances promptly, retain an audit trail, and stay current on statutory deadlines and regulatory changes.
I would assess the scope and employee impact immediately, validate the underlying data with the relevant stakeholders, and determine whether a corrected run or an off-cycle payment is required. I would communicate the resolution plan and timing clearly, document the root cause, and implement a preventive control after the cycle is complete.
I would monitor on-time payroll completion, payroll accuracy, number and aging of exceptions, statutory filing timeliness, payment success rate, reconciliation completion, SLA adherence, and recurring root-cause trends. These metrics make operational risks visible and help prioritize improvements.
I would first map the current workflow, quantify effort and error points, and identify controls that must remain in place. Then I would standardize inputs, automate repeatable validations or reports where appropriate, pilot the revised process, and measure the impact on accuracy, turnaround time, and user experience.
I communicate decisions, deadlines, dependencies, and context in clear written updates that colleagues can act on without a meeting. I maintain transparent documentation, raise risks early, use agreed escalation paths for time-sensitive issues, and ensure handoffs include ownership and next steps.
