Sample interview questions
I begin by confirming complete bank activity and account balances, then reconcile each account to the general ledger using a consistent checklist. I investigate outstanding items promptly, document reconciling differences, and ensure all necessary corrections are approved and posted before final review.
I use a structured close calendar and standardized workpapers to confirm reconciliations, supporting schedules, accruals, and prepaid balances are complete. Before issuance, I perform variance analysis, complete a quality-assurance checklist, and clearly document significant current-month items in the financial-statement cover memo.
I would trace the transaction from the ledger to source documents, bank records, and relevant subledgers to identify timing, coding, duplicate-entry, or missing-entry issues. I would document the root cause, propose or post the appropriate correction under established controls, and communicate the resolution to relevant stakeholders.
I prepare organized schedules, reconciliations, source documentation, and clear explanations for material account balances and variances. I respond to auditor requests promptly, track open items, and use audit feedback to strengthen recurring controls and documentation practices.
I rely on standardized templates, reconciliation checklists, prioritization by deadline and complexity, and disciplined review steps. I automate repeatable work where appropriate, but reserve time for reasonableness checks and escalation of unusual variances before statements are issued.
