Sample interview questions
How would you explain a new math concept to a second-grade student who is struggling?

I would begin with a simple diagnostic question to identify the specific misunderstanding, then use concrete visual examples and familiar real-life scenarios. I would model one problem, solve another collaboratively, and ask the student to explain their thinking to confirm understanding.

How do you keep Grades 1–4 students engaged during an online one-on-one lesson?

I use short, varied activities such as visual models, interactive whiteboard work, quick games, and frequent check-ins. I also set clear goals, celebrate effort, and adjust the pace when I notice the student needs more challenge or additional support.

How would you personalize a lesson while remaining aligned with Common Core standards?

I would identify the relevant grade-level standard, assess the learner’s current skills, and choose examples and practice problems at an appropriate level of scaffolding. This maintains standards alignment while addressing the student’s individual gaps, strengths, and learning preferences.

Describe how you provide feedback to a young learner after a tutoring session.

I provide specific and encouraging feedback that highlights what the student did well, identifies one or two next steps, and offers a practical strategy for improvement. I use age-appropriate language and focus on effort, reasoning, and progress rather than simply whether an answer was correct.

What would you do if a student became frustrated or disengaged during a math lesson?

I would acknowledge the student’s feelings, reduce the task into smaller achievable steps, and use an alternate explanation or interactive activity. Once the student experiences a small success, I would reinforce their effort and gradually return to the original learning objective.
