Sample interview questions
How do you adapt a math lesson for a student who is struggling with algebraic concepts?

I begin with a brief diagnostic discussion and a few targeted problems to identify the specific misconception. I then break the concept into smaller steps, use concrete examples or visual models, model a solution aloud, and gradually shift responsibility to the student through guided practice. I close with a short check for understanding and use the results to plan the next lesson.

How would you keep a high-school student engaged during an online one-on-one math session?

I use an interactive structure rather than lecturing for the full session. This includes asking frequent reasoning questions, using a shared digital whiteboard, connecting examples to the student's interests or goals, and alternating explanation with practice. I also set a clear objective at the beginning and acknowledge progress throughout the lesson.

How do you provide feedback that helps students improve without discouraging them?

I make feedback specific, timely, and focused on the process. I point out what the student did correctly first, identify the exact step where their reasoning changed course, and guide them to correct it through questions when possible. I end by reinforcing a practical strategy they can use independently on similar problems.

What is your approach to preparing lessons for subjects such as Algebra II, Geometry, or SAT Math?

I align the lesson with the student's current course objectives and assess their existing skills before choosing materials. I prepare a concise explanation, worked examples, scaffolded practice, and a final independent problem or exit check. For SAT Math, I also incorporate pacing, question-analysis strategies, and review of common distractors.

Describe how you would communicate student progress to a parent or program coordinator.

I would provide concise, evidence-based updates that summarize topics covered, demonstrated strengths, continuing gaps, and recommended next steps. I would use clear language rather than jargon, include examples of measurable progress when available, and maintain a constructive tone focused on how we can continue supporting the student.
