Sample interview questions
How do you approach an audit of risk-adjustment coding work?

I begin by confirming the applicable coding guidelines, client requirements, audit scope, and sampling methodology. I evaluate coding accuracy and documentation support, classify errors by root cause and severity, and provide clear findings with recommendations, owners, and follow-up measures to validate correction.

Describe how you would improve recurring coding errors from a vendor team.

I would analyze error trends by diagnosis category, coder, client, and root cause to determine whether the issue is knowledge, workflow, documentation, or policy related. I would then implement targeted education, clarify job aids and benchmarks, establish a corrective-action plan, and monitor subsequent audits to confirm sustained improvement.

How do you balance productivity expectations with coding quality and compliance?

I use defined quality thresholds, consistent audit criteria, and transparent reporting so performance expectations are measurable. When quality declines, I prioritize compliant remediation and targeted coaching rather than simply increasing volume, because unsupported coding creates greater operational and regulatory risk.

What information would you include in a monthly quality report for leadership?

I would include audit volume, accuracy rates, error categories, trend comparisons, vendor and internal performance against benchmarks, corrective-action status, training completed, and key risks requiring leadership decisions. The report should connect findings to business impact and identify the next actions and accountable owners.

How do you communicate a difficult compliance finding to a stakeholder?

I present the finding factually, reference the applicable requirement and supporting examples, and explain the operational or compliance risk without assigning blame. I then focus the conversation on a practical remediation plan, timelines, and how we will measure successful resolution.
