Sample interview questions
How do you ensure a prescription is clinically safe and appropriate before approving or prescribing it?

I use a structured clinical check covering the indication, patient history, allergies, interactions, contraindications, dosing, formulation, monitoring requirements, and relevant guidance. Where information is incomplete or risk is unclear, I clarify it with the prescriber, patient, or wider clinical team and document my decision-making.

Describe how you would approach prescribing a cannabis-based medicine for a patient with a complex condition.

I would complete a comprehensive assessment of the patient's diagnosis, previous treatments, current medicines, comorbidities, goals, and potential risks. I would discuss expected benefits, limitations, adverse effects, monitoring, and shared treatment goals, then prescribe conservatively in line with applicable guidance and review outcomes regularly.

How do you manage competing clinical queries and prescription-review tasks during a busy evening or weekend shift?

I triage work according to clinical risk and urgency, prioritising time-critical prescriptions, potential safety concerns, and patients at immediate risk. I communicate expected timelines to colleagues, keep accurate task records, and escalate when workload or complexity could compromise safe care.

What would you do if a patient reported an unexpected adverse effect after starting treatment?

I would assess severity, timing, dose relationship, concurrent medicines, and any red-flag symptoms. I would provide appropriate immediate advice, arrange urgent escalation where necessary, consider dose adjustment or discontinuation within my prescribing scope, document the event, and complete safety reporting when required.

How would you educate a patient or clinician who is unfamiliar with cannabis-based medicines?

I would tailor the discussion to their level of knowledge and use clear, balanced, evidence-informed language. I would explain the treatment rationale, administration, likely benefits, risks, interaction considerations, monitoring, and when to seek help, while confirming understanding through questions and teach-back.
