Sample interview questions
How do you prepare for and conduct a monitoring visit at an investigative site?

I begin by reviewing prior visit reports, outstanding action items, enrollment and data metrics, safety information, and protocol deviations. During the visit, I verify source data, informed-consent documentation, investigational product accountability, staff training, and essential documents, then discuss risks and corrective actions with the site. I document observations promptly and follow through until all actions are resolved.

Describe how you would manage a site with recurring protocol deviations.

I would first assess the deviation pattern and its potential impact on participant safety, data integrity, and study compliance. I would discuss root causes with the investigator and site team, provide targeted retraining, agree a documented corrective and preventive action plan, and increase oversight where appropriate. I would also escalate material risks to the project team and sponsor in line with applicable procedures.

How do you ensure compliance with ICH-GCP and local regulatory requirements?

I apply ICH-GCP principles throughout site qualification, initiation, monitoring, and close-out, with particular attention to informed consent, participant protection, source documentation, safety reporting, and investigational product control. I keep current on local requirements and company SOPs, verify compliance through systematic monitoring, and ensure findings are documented, communicated, and remediated within required timelines.

How would you prioritize work when several sites have urgent issues at the same time?

I prioritize according to participant safety, regulatory compliance, data-criticality, and impact on key study milestones. I communicate early with sites and the project team about expected timelines, delegate or seek support when appropriate, and maintain a clear tracker for actions and escalation points. This allows me to address high-risk matters immediately while ensuring lower-risk work continues to progress.

What is your approach to mentoring a CRA I or CRA II?

I tailor mentoring to the colleague's experience level, using joint visit preparation, co-monitoring, report review, and structured feedback. I explain the reasoning behind risk-based decisions rather than only providing answers, so the CRA develops sound independent judgment. I also set measurable development goals and create a supportive environment for raising questions early.
