The role, at a glance.
Salesloft is seeking a senior Site Reliability Engineering-focused software engineer to improve the availability, resiliency, and operational maturity of its cloud services. The role designs and operates scalable cloud infrastructure and containerized environments using Terraform, Kubernetes, and automated CI/CD pipelines. It requires ownership of SLIs, SLOs, incident response, fault tolerance, disaster recovery, and reliability improvements for critical third-party services. The engineer will collaborate closely with product engineering teams, contribute to system design and reviews, and mentor peers while working remotely from Mexico. Candidates need at least five years of relevant distributed-systems and public-cloud experience, with AWS or GCP and CKA/CKS certification preferred.

Sample interview questions
I would begin by identifying the user journeys that matter most, such as successful API requests or application availability. I would define measurable indicators for availability, latency, error rate, and possibly freshness, then establish realistic SLO targets based on customer expectations and historical performance. I would connect error-budget consumption to alerting, release decisions, and reliability improvement work.
I would structure Terraform into reusable modules with clearly separated environment configuration and remote state management. Changes would run through pull-request review, formatting, validation, security scanning, and plan review before controlled applies. I would minimize drift through automation, restrict production permissions, version modules, and use rollback or recovery procedures for infrastructure changes.
I would first confirm impact, scope, and current customer risk, then use dashboards, logs, traces, and recent deployment history to form and test hypotheses. I would prioritize mitigation, such as rollback, traffic shaping, or failover, while communicating status clearly to stakeholders. After recovery, I would facilitate a blameless retrospective that identifies root causes, contributing conditions, and concrete follow-up actions.
I start by defining failure modes, recovery objectives, and dependencies, including third-party services. I then design for redundancy, health checks, graceful degradation, backups, tested restoration, and appropriate multi-zone or multi-region strategies where justified. I validate the design through game days and regular recovery exercises rather than assuming the documented process will work.
I provide paved-road tooling, templates, automated checks, and self-service observability so reliable practices are easier than ad hoc alternatives. I collaborate early in design reviews to explain tradeoffs and establish pragmatic service objectives. I also use production evidence and post-incident learning to prioritize improvements that reduce risk while preserving developer velocity.
