Sample interview questions
Describe a complex or non-routine transaction for which you developed a technical accounting position.

I begin by gathering the contract terms and transaction facts, identifying the relevant US GAAP guidance, and documenting the alternatives considered. I then prepare a concise memo with the conclusion, supporting calculations, risks, and required journal entries, and review it with stakeholders and auditors before implementation.

How do you ensure assigned accounts are closed accurately and on time?

I maintain a detailed close checklist with owners, dependencies, deadlines, and review steps. I complete reconciliations early where possible, investigate unusual balances through variance analysis, retain clear supporting documentation, and escalate blockers promptly so reviewers have time to complete their work.

Give an example of an accounting process you automated or improved.

I would first map the existing workflow, quantify manual effort and control risks, and identify repeatable data inputs. I have used ERP saved searches and Excel-based validation to standardize reconciliations, reduce manual rekeying, create exception reports, and leave an auditable record of the review.

How would you work with Engineering or IT during an accounting-system change?

I would translate accounting requirements into clear data, workflow, reporting, and control specifications. I would define test cases, reconcile outputs to the prior process, document approvals and exceptions, and ensure the change is fully operational before relying on it in the close.

How do you explain a significant financial variance to non-accounting stakeholders?

I lead with the business driver and materiality, then separate recurring from one-time effects and support the explanation with a concise bridge or trend analysis. I avoid technical jargon where possible, state any assumptions clearly, and explain the expected impact on future periods.

Opportunity details

About this role.

Posit is a Public Benefit Corporation and Certified B Corp on a mission to create open-source software for data science, scientific research, and technical communication — and we’re building a company designed to thrive for 100 years.

Our Accounting team keeps the company’s books accurate, timely, and audit-ready, and partners with Finance, Payroll, and the business to turn financial data into decisions. We value sound judgment, clear communication, and continuous improvement, and we invest in automation so our people spend their time on analysis and problem solving rather than manual work. We’re looking for a Senior Accountant to join the team, reporting to an Accounting Manager and working closely with FP&A, Tax, Payroll, AP/AR, Engineering/IT, and our external auditors.

YOUR IMPACT

Why this role exists: to keep Posit’s books accurate, timely, and audit-ready — and to raise the standard for how the Accounting team works. You are singularly responsible for:

  • Prepare accurate, timely financial statements, reconciliation schedules, and supporting analysis (flux, variance, and trend) for your assigned areas. Serve as the subject matter expert for those areas, including researching and documenting the technical accounting positions behind complex or non-routine transactions.
  • Lead accounting projects and system changes from plan through delivery.
  • Identify and implement improvements to accounting practices, including automation that delivers data faster and reduces risk across teams.
  • Own internal controls for your areas; identify process or control deficiencies, design and implement solutions, and raise the standard for how the team works.
  • Collaborate well with others, stay positive under pressure, welcome feedback, and contribute to the department’s shared goals.

HOW YOU’LL COLLABORATE

You’ll be the senior voice for the areas you own, working across Posit to keep the close on schedule and the controls strong:

  • Partner with FP&A, Payroll, Tax, AP/AR, and Engineering/IT on data flows, system changes, internal controls, and month-end close dependencies.
  • Support internal and external audits and the testing of people, process, and system controls.
  • Mentor less experienced teammates with their questions by reviewing their work and explaining your thinking, and present regularly to the team and stakeholders.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

  • Has independently run month-end close and prepared financial statements for multiple areas, including complex or non-routine transactions, with limited review.
  • Hands-on NetSuite experience (or a related ERP): journal entries, reconciliations, saved searches, and running the close in the system.
  • Advanced Excel skills, including complex formulas (lookups, nested logic, pivots, and array formulas) for reconciliations and analysis.
  • Day-to-day experience using an AI tool for analysis, automation, or documentation, with sound judgment in validating its output.
  • Strong working knowledge of US GAAP and the ability to explain accounting decisions clearly, with the reasoning behind them.
  • Understanding of people, process, and system controls, and a track record of leading a project or process improvement.

NICE TO HAVE

  • Extending NetSuite and our AI tooling (e.g., saved searches, workflows, scripting) to provide data faster and mitigate risk.
  • Experience with new functional areas and technologies adjacent to accounting (e.g., revenue, billing, or subledger systems).
  • Familiarity with our entity structure, close calendar, policies, and the systems that connect Accounting to the rest of the business — or the curiosity to learn them quickly.
  • Large-project planning: creating major project plans, estimating well, and explaining your confidence in delivery.

YOUR FIRST YEAR

Within 1 month, you’ll…

  • Complete onboarding to our close calendar, chart of accounts, policies, and our NetSuite and Numeric (month-end close software) setup, and shadow one full month-end close.
  • Take over the reconciliations and journal entries for your assigned accounts and complete them on the close calendar with reviewer sign-off.
  • Document the people, process, and system controls for your assigned areas and share a list of risks and questions with your manager.
  • Meet 1:1 with key partners (FP&A, Tax, AP/AR, and audit contacts) to learn their needs and agree on how you will work together.

Within 3 months, you’ll…

  • Prepare your assigned financial statements and flux analysis independently for two consecutive closes, with minimal review comments.
  • Present a variance analysis to the team that is clearly structured and explains the drivers behind the numbers.
  • Contribute your assigned inputs to the budget schedule on time, with supporting detail and clearly stated assumptions.
  • Identify at least two process improvements, rank them by impact and effort, and implement one end to end.
  • Research and document the technical accounting position for one non-routine transaction or policy area, and walk the Accounting Managers through it.

Within 6 months, you’ll…

  • Enhance or redesign reconciliations to show substantial backup and clear explanation of work.
  • Lead one project or system change end to end: write the project plan, estimate the work, state your confidence in the timeline, and deliver on it.
  • Design and ship an automation (using NetSuite, Excel, and/or AI tools) that reduces manual effort in the close or reporting process and gets data to stakeholders faster.
  • Present to the team on a regular cadence (e.g., monthly) and take on additional accounting responsibilities.

Within 12 months, you’ll…

  • Be the recognized subject matter expert for your areas, the person others consult on complex accounting questions, while owning an expanded set of areas and meeting close deadlines.
  • Drive process improvements that change how the team operates, with measurable results (e.g., close days saved, hours of manual work removed).
