Sample interview questions
How would you manage a portfolio with many renewal dates occurring in the same month?

I would maintain a structured renewal calendar and CRM workflow, segmenting accounts by renewal date, value, risk, and complexity. I would begin outreach early, schedule follow-ups, document every action, and escalate blockers promptly so high-risk renewals do not become last-minute issues.

Describe how you would identify an expansion opportunity during a renewal conversation.

I would ask consultative questions about the customer’s current usage, team growth, new initiatives, and unmet needs. If their answers indicate a need for additional seats, a higher tier, or another capability, I would connect that need to the relevant offering and coordinate with the appropriate account or customer-success partner.

What would you do if a customer requests non-standard renewal terms?

I would clarify the requested terms and the customer’s business reason, review the existing agreement and approved guidance, and document the details in the CRM. Since non-standard terms require appropriate review, I would involve the senior renewals manager and relevant internal partners rather than make commitments outside the defined process.

How do you ensure renewal quotes and order forms are accurate?

I use a repeatable checklist covering account information, products, quantities, pricing, contract dates, payment terms, and approvals. I compare documents with the CRM and prior agreement, verify any changes with internal stakeholders, and perform a final review before sending them to the customer.

How would you communicate a potential churn risk to internal stakeholders?

I would communicate early and factually, summarizing the customer’s concern, renewal date, commercial impact, actions already taken, and the help needed. I would propose clear next steps and keep the CRM updated so Sales, Customer Success, and leadership share the same view of the risk and mitigation plan.

  • Identify and surface expansion opportunities — additional seats, tiers, or modules — that come out of those conversations.
  • Probe for new use cases and unmet needs within existing accounts, connecting what customers describe to relevant GitLab capabilities they aren’t yet using.
  • Prepare and send renewal quotes, order forms, and related documentation accurately and on schedule, structuring them to reflect any expansion identified.
  • Prepare and send renewal quotes, order forms, and related documentation accurately and on schedule.

  • Collaborate with Sales, Customer Success, and Finance to help identify expansion opportunities, resolve blockers and keep renewals moving.
  • Communicate proactively and transparently with customers and internal stakeholders, adapting to GitLab’s communication framework.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date records in the CRM/renewals system for forecasting and reporting.
  • Prioritize tasks with guidance from more senior team members to drive quality, timely results.
  • Contribute to team goals by working collaboratively with peer RM’s.

What You’ll Bring

  • Can execute basic renewal processes independently (“basic knots”) and has been introduced to more advanced scenarios (“complex knots”) such as multi-year deals, upsell-attached renewals, or non-standard terms.
  • Developing understanding of GitLab’s way of working, values, and high-performance culture.
  • Awareness of GitLab’s remote work best practices.
  • Growth mindset and sense of ownership — proactively seeks out ways to learn and improve, and takes action rather than waiting for direction.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills; comfortable managing many renewals at once.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to follow defined processes and frameworks while flagging exceptions appropriately.
  • Collaborative mindset and openness to feedback and coaching from senior teammates and manager.
  • The ability to travel for events such as trainings, team offsites, customer meetings, etc.
