The role, at a glance.
Monzo is hiring a Prudential Risk Manager for its second-line Prudential Risk Oversight team. The role provides independent oversight and challenge of capital, recovery, resolution, ICAAP, financial forecasting, and stress-testing activities. The manager will review first-line financial models and controls, perform assurance work, and present insights and recommendations to risk committees and the Board. Success requires banking or regulatory prudential-risk experience, strong financial modelling skills, and the ability to challenge stakeholders constructively. Sample interview questions
I would begin by mapping the ICAAP to applicable regulatory requirements and the bank’s risk appetite. I would assess the methodology, key assumptions, governance, data quality, capital adequacy conclusions, and stress-testing outputs, then document evidence-based challenge and agree actions with clear owners and deadlines.
I would retain independence by assessing the model design, assumptions, controls, documentation, and outputs rather than rebuilding or operating the model for the first line. My challenge would focus on whether the model is fit for purpose, whether sensitivities are sufficiently severe and plausible, and whether governance supports reliable decision-making.
I would assess whether recovery indicators, triggers, and options are credible, timely, actionable, and supported by robust governance. I would also examine the interaction with capital and liquidity stress scenarios, operational readiness, management information, communication plans, and lessons from testing or simulation exercises.
I would present the issue concisely, explain the regulatory and financial implications, quantify the potential impact where possible, and distinguish facts from judgement. I would recommend proportionate remediation options, identify decision points, and make ownership, timelines, and residual risks clear.
I would engage stakeholders early, seek to understand their objectives and constraints, and base my challenge on shared regulatory requirements, evidence, and risk outcomes. By being transparent about concerns, inviting discussion on solutions, and following through on agreed actions, I can preserve trust without compromising independence.
