The role, at a glance.
Monzo is hiring a Product Manager to own the roadmap for Finance Infrastructure within its Payments Platform. The Product Manager will partner closely with Engineering, Finance, Payments and Operations leaders to translate complex business, accounting and regulatory needs into product strategy and delivery. Sample interview questions
I would first establish the platform’s strategic outcomes, such as reliable accounting, faster market expansion, reduced manual reconciliation and stronger controls. I would map requests to those outcomes, quantify risk and operational impact, identify dependencies, and use a transparent prioritisation framework that balances urgent regulatory or reliability work with investments that reduce future complexity.
I would begin by mapping the end-to-end flow, data sources, ownership points and exception categories. I would define baseline measures such as exception volume, resolution time, financial exposure and manual effort, then work with Engineering and Finance to prioritise data-quality fixes, automation opportunities, clear audit trails and operational tooling. Delivery would be phased to reduce risk while demonstrating measurable improvements early.
I focus on understanding system boundaries, data flows, dependencies, failure modes and the trade-offs behind architectural choices. I do not need to prescribe implementation details, but I ask informed questions, make product constraints explicit and ensure technical debt, reliability and scalability are considered alongside feature delivery. This allows engineers and product teams to make decisions with shared context.
I would identify the domain concepts that must be configurable rather than hard-coded, including legal entities, currency handling, accounting rules, reporting requirements and controls. I would partner with Finance, Compliance and Engineering early to define reusable abstractions, clear ownership and test scenarios for market expansion. I would also avoid designing solely for the first launch market when a modest upfront investment can prevent expensive rework later.
I would explain how I collected and grouped incoming requests, identified recurring underlying problems, and translated them into a shared product narrative and outcome-based roadmap. I would establish decision criteria, communicate trade-offs regularly and deliver an initial set of high-value improvements that built trust. Over time, stakeholders would shift from submitting isolated requests to contributing to a prioritised strategy.

Our Payments team⭐
Payments is at the heart of Monzo. It’s how our customers move, receive, spend and manage their money, from cards and bank transfers to cross-border payments, merchant acquiring, payment experiences in the app, and the platform infrastructure that underpins the whole bank.
This role sits in our Payments Platform area, working most closely with our Finance Infrastructure squad. The squad sits in Payments, but partners deeply with Finance teams to build the systems, abstractions and capabilities Monzo needs to operate safely, scale efficiently, and expand into new markets. You’ll work on foundational financial infrastructure: the ledgers, data, controls, reporting, reconciliation and platform capabilities that help Monzo understand, account for and manage money across the bank.
This is a role for someone who gets genuinely excited by complex, technical infrastructure. The work is often behind the scenes, but it’s business-critical: it helps Monzo scale, launch new products and markets, support Finance, and keep the bank running safely.
🔑You’ll play a key role by…
- Building the roadmap for Finance Infrastructure within Payments Platform and executing on it.
- Partnering closely with Engineering, Finance and Payments leaders to understand what Monzo needs from its financial systems today and as we scale.
- Translating complex finance, accounting, operational and regulatory needs into scalable platform capabilities.
- Prioritising across competing stakeholder needs, balancing urgent delivery with long-term system health.
- Helping Monzo build financial infrastructure that can support multiple products, entities, countries, currencies and regulatory environments.
- Building trusted relationships with senior stakeholders across Finance, Engineering, Product and Operations.
🤩 We’d love to hear from you if…
- You’re a strong Product Manager with experience owning complex technical, platform, infrastructure or financial systems.
- You have enough technical depth to partner credibly with engineers and reason about systems, trade-offs, dependencies and long-term architecture.
- You’re excited by “boring but critical” infrastructure, things like ledgers, reconciliation, financial data, controls, reporting, internal platforms, abstractions or backend systems.
- You can work with senior and cross-functional stakeholders, including Finance, Engineering, Product and operational teams.
- You’re comfortable bringing product thinking into ambiguous or stakeholder-heavy environments, and moving teams from request-led delivery towards long-term strategy.
- You’re high-agency, ambitious and excited to stretch yourself in a team with a high bar.
- You care about customers and business outcomes, even when the work is several layers removed from the end customer experience.
Not ticking every box? That’s totally okay! Studies show that women and people of colour might hesitate to apply unless they meet every single requirement.
