Sample interview questions
I begin by aligning with engineering leadership on business goals, operating-model changes, capability gaps, and retention risks. I use workforce and engagement data to prioritize interventions, then establish clear ownership, milestones, and measures such as regrettable attrition, internal mobility, manager effectiveness, and delivery of succession plans.
I would first clarify the performance expectations, documented feedback, business impact, and support already provided. I would coach the leader to create a consistent improvement plan with measurable outcomes and regular checkpoints, while ensuring fair treatment, appropriate documentation, and partnership with Employee Relations.
I would review voluntary and regrettable attrition, retention of critical talent, hiring velocity, internal mobility, span of control, representation data, performance distribution, engagement trends, and succession coverage. The metrics should be segmented appropriately to identify patterns by organization, level, location, and role family while protecting employee privacy.
I would align leaders on the rationale, decision rights, employee impact, and implementation plan before communication begins. I would develop manager guidance, clear employee messaging, feedback channels, and transition support, then monitor sentiment, retention risk, and operational outcomes so adjustments can be made quickly.
I build credibility by learning the business model, engineering priorities, and the metrics that matter to leaders. I bring data-informed recommendations, communicate trade-offs directly, maintain confidentiality, and reliably follow through on commitments while constructively challenging decisions that create people or compliance risk.
