Sample interview questions
I would review the job description, scope, decision-making authority, required skills, and organizational impact. I would then match the role to internal job architecture and relevant external market survey benchmarks, assess internal comparators, and document a recommendation that considers both market competitiveness and internal equity.
I begin by defining required fields, validation rules, and authoritative data sources. I use Excel queries, reconciliations, exception reports, and spot checks to identify missing, inconsistent, or outlier records, then partner with data owners to correct issues and retain an audit trail of updates.
I would validate employee, salary, performance, and budget data; configure compensation planning worksheets or system inputs; and test calculations before launch. During the cycle, I would monitor exceptions, support HR and manager questions, perform quality checks, and prepare final reconciliation reports for Payroll and leadership.
I regularly use pivot tables, XLOOKUP or INDEX-MATCH, SUMIFS, IF statements, conditional formatting, data validation, charts, and Power Query where appropriate. I structure files with clear source tabs and documented assumptions so analyses are accurate, repeatable, and easy for stakeholders to review.
I present the recommendation clearly and objectively, explaining the relevant job scope, internal comparators, market data, range position, and applicable policy. I focus on the evidence, identify available options within the compensation framework, and communicate any compliance or equity considerations respectfully.
