About the role

We’re hiring a Direct Tax Lead to own our US income tax provision, compliance, and controls, reporting to the Head of Tax. ElevenLabs operates through its US entity and ~9 international entities and is growing fast, which means the provision, the compliance calendar, and the controls around them need a dedicated owner.

This is a hands-on ownership role. The provision and returns are prepared by external providers; you manage those engagements and are accountable for the output. You’ll own the quarterly and annual ASC 740 provision (deferreds, valuation allowance, uncertain tax positions, rate rec, footnote disclosures), the US federal and state compliance calendar (returns, extensions, estimated payments), and the technical work underneath it: §174 capitalization, §382 and NOL tracking.

You’ll also assist in designing, documenting, and operating controls, and write the memos that support our positions, working directly with our Big 4 advisors and external auditors alongside the Head of Tax.

Requirements

  • Deep ASC 740 expertise at a multinational — provision, deferreds, valuation allowance, uncertain tax positions, rate reconciliation, and footnote disclosure

  • Experience owning a US federal and multistate compliance calendar (returns, extensions, estimates)

  • Working knowledge of US international provisions (NCTI/GILTI, Subpart F, FDDEI, §163(j)) and how they flow into the provision

  • Experience managing Big 4 or equivalent providers and working directly with external auditors

  • Has built or operated SOX controls over tax, or supported a first SOX implementation

  • CPA

Bonus: pre-IPO or first-10-K experience, §174/§41 computation, §382 studies, equity compensation tax (ISOs, NSOs, RSUs), OneSource Tax Provision or similar.

Growth Potential

We believe in hiring the best talent in the world to make an impact in the right role at the right time. At ElevenLabs, strong performance creates opportunities for growth. Here are some of the career paths you can expect after excelling in this role:

  • Build and lead the direct tax team as we bring provision and compliance in-house

  • Expand into other strategic initiatives such as M&A, PE mitigation policy, corporate structuring.

  • Broaden into wider tax leadership as our footprint grows

Location

This role is remote-first, so it can be executed from anywhere on the east coast, New York preferred.

Core skills

Skills and capabilities most closely associated with this opportunity.

Sample interview questions
How have you owned an ASC 740 provision process for a multinational organization?

I would describe the full close process, including data collection, current and deferred tax calculations, valuation-allowance assessment, uncertain-tax-position analysis, rate reconciliation, and financial-statement disclosures. I would also explain how I reviewed provider workpapers, resolved open items, and ensured the provision was audit-ready.

How would you establish a reliable US federal and multistate tax compliance calendar in a fast-growing company?

I would map every return, extension, estimated-payment, information-reporting, and state filing obligation by legal entity and jurisdiction. I would assign accountable owners, create advance milestones and review checkpoints, reconcile filings to provision and general-ledger data, and maintain a tracker for notices, payments, and changing nexus risks.

What controls would you implement around the tax provision and compliance process?

I would implement controls over source-data completeness, entity mapping, account reconciliations, review of key tax assumptions, approval of journal entries, filing authorization, and retention of supporting documentation. Each control would have a defined owner, frequency, evidence standard, and remediation process aligned with SOX requirements.

How do Sections 174 and 382 affect a company's tax provision?

Section 174 can require capitalization and amortization of specified research and experimental expenditures, creating book-tax differences and deferred-tax impacts. Section 382 can limit the use of NOLs after an ownership change, so I would assess limitation studies, maintain NOL schedules, evaluate realizability, and reflect any effects in the provision and disclosures.

How would you manage Big 4 advisors and external auditors while remaining accountable for tax outcomes?

I would set a clear scope, timeline, deliverables, and review expectations at the start of each engagement. I would challenge assumptions, reconcile outputs to internal records, document management conclusions, and address auditor questions directly so that external advisors supplement—not replace—internal ownership of tax positions.
