About this role.
About Nebius:
Nebius is leading a new era in cloud infrastructure for the global AI economy. We are building a full-stack AI cloud platform that supports developers and enterprises from data and model training through to production deployment, without the cost and complexity of building large in-house AI/ML infrastructure.
Built by engineers, for engineers. From large-scale GPU orchestration to inference optimization, we own the hard problems across compute, storage, networking and applied AI.
Listed on Nasdaq (NBIS) and headquartered in Amsterdam, we have a global footprint with R&D hubs across Europe, the UK, North America and Israel. Our team of 1,500+ includes hundreds of engineers with deep expertise across hardware, software and AI R&D.
The role
We are seeking a GPU Cluster Architect to drive the design of our next-generation AI infrastructure. In this high-impact, hands-on role, you will make end-to-end architectural decisions across compute, networking, and storage — ensuring our platforms can meet the massive scale, performance, and reliability requirements of modern AI workloads.
This is a high-impact, hands-on architecture role where you’ll define how tens of thousands of GPUs are interconnected, cooled down, powered, and optimized across multiple data center sites.
You are welcome to work remotely from the USA.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Cluster Design: Architect scalable GPU cluster topologies including compute nodes, interconnect (InfiniBand, Ethernet), storage, and control planes.
- Performance Modeling: Analyze AI/ML workloads (e.g. LLM training, inference) to inform design tradeoffs across latency, bandwidth, and GPU density.
- Network Architecture: Align with network architect relevant design and validate low-latency, high-throughput interconnects (e.g., InfiniBand HDR/NDR, RoCEv2) at POD and DC scale.
- Storage Integration: Work with storage teams to optimize performance for training datasets, checkpointing, and others.
- Reliability & Monitoring: Understand and analyze signal from monitoring systems to the detect flows in design
- Collaboration: Partner with site reliability, networking, storage, and DC engineering teams to operationalize and scale your architecture.
We expect you to have:
- 5+ years of experience designing clusters.
- Deep understanding of modern GPU architecture (NVIDIA, AMD, etc.).
- Experience with HPC interconnects (InfiniBand & RoCE).
- Solid background in systems architecture, networking, and hardware reliability.
- Experience in scripting for automation and telemetry pipelines (Python, Go, etc.)
Key employee benefits in the US:
- Health insurance: 100% company-paid medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees and families.
- 401(k) plan: Up to 4% company match with immediate vesting.
- Parental leave: 20 weeks paid for primary caregivers, 12 weeks for secondary caregivers.
- Remote work reimbursement: Up to $85/month for mobile and internet.
- Disability & life insurance: Company-paid short-term, long-term and life insurance coverage.

Sample interview questions
I would begin with workload characteristics such as model size, training parallelism, communication patterns, storage throughput, and availability targets. I would then define a modular pod architecture with balanced GPU density, non-blocking or appropriately oversubscribed InfiniBand or RoCE fabrics, high-throughput storage, and clear scaling boundaries. Finally, I would validate the design through simulation, benchmark representative workloads, and incorporate observability and failure-domain requirements from the outset.
I assess latency and bandwidth needs, GPU collective communication behavior, operational maturity, existing network standards, cost, and the team’s ability to manage lossless Ethernet requirements. InfiniBand is often compelling for predictable HPC performance and mature GPU workload tooling, while RoCEv2 can integrate effectively into Ethernet-based environments when congestion control, PFC, ECN, and telemetry are engineered carefully. The choice should be validated against real workload benchmarks and operational risk.
I would correlate application-level metrics, collective communication telemetry, GPU utilization, CPU and PCIe activity, fabric counters, and storage latency. This helps separate bottlenecks caused by data loading, network congestion, topology imbalance, stragglers, insufficient storage throughput, or software configuration. I would test a focused hypothesis, compare results against a known baseline, and deploy the remediation with monitoring to confirm sustained improvement.
I define failure domains at the node, rack, pod, fabric, storage, and site levels, then ensure the scheduler and control planes can tolerate failures within those boundaries. I include redundant network paths, capacity headroom, hardware health monitoring, automated remediation, and well-tested recovery procedures. For multi-site designs, I also clarify which workloads require local high-performance communication and which can safely use asynchronous replication or federated control.
I would automate repeatable lifecycle tasks such as provisioning, configuration validation, firmware compliance, health checks, and capacity inventory using version-controlled workflows. Telemetry should cover GPU, network, storage, power, cooling, and workload-level signals with actionable alert thresholds and dashboards. The goal is to detect degradation early, shorten incident resolution, and provide data that feeds future architectural decisions.
