Sample interview questions
How would you manage the end-to-end preparation and filing of a Form 10-Q or Form 10-K?

I would establish a detailed reporting calendar, assign clear owners for financial statements and disclosures, and hold regular status reviews with Accounting, Legal, FP&A, Tax, and Investor Relations. I would perform technical and disclosure reviews, coordinate early with external auditors, validate XBRL tagging and EDGAR outputs, and complete final executive and disclosure-control approvals before filing.

Describe your approach to resolving a complex US GAAP accounting issue involving a new transaction.

I start by understanding the commercial substance and gathering complete transaction facts. I research the relevant ASC guidance and interpretive materials, document alternatives and conclusions in a technical memo, discuss the position with auditors and internal stakeholders, and ensure the accounting treatment and related disclosures are implemented consistently.

What actions would you take if a SOX control deficiency were identified during testing?

I would assess the root cause, scope, and potential financial-reporting impact with the control owner and Internal Audit. Then I would design a practical remediation plan, document revised controls and evidence requirements, train the responsible team, and retest the remediation promptly while keeping management and auditors informed.

How do you make technical accounting conclusions understandable to non-accounting leaders?

I lead with the business impact, decision needed, and key risks rather than technical terminology. I use concise summaries and examples, explain the accounting rationale in plain language, present available options where applicable, and provide a clear recommendation with implications for financial statements and disclosures.

How would you develop and retain a high-performing financial reporting team?

I would set clear ownership, quality standards, and development goals for each team member. I use regular coaching, timely feedback, review of technical work, and stretch assignments such as leading a disclosure area or accounting memo, while improving processes and automation to reduce repetitive work during close and filing cycles.
