What’s the most unusual skill you’ve acquired while balancing remote education and work?

Career Growth & Skills Asked Active 12 May 2026
Question details

I’ve been simultaneously attending online university and working remotely for over a year now. In the process, I’ve accidentally become weirdly good at time blocking and have developed an almost supernatural ability to detect when my wifi is about to drop just before important calls. Anyone else pick up strange skills or abilities while juggling remote education and work?

I've become freakishly good at predicting exactly how long tasks will take me, down to the minute. After months of scheduling back-to-back work meetings and class sessions, I've developed this internal clock that knows precisely how long it'll take to write that email (7 mins), prep for that meeting (13 mins), or finish that assignment (42 mins). My Google Calendar is a work of precision art now.

I've developed what my roommates call 'the stance' - I can type coherent emails while brushing my teeth, making coffee, and listening to a lecture simultaneously. I've also mastered the art of taking notes in my university class with my left hand while completing work tasks with my right (using separate mice). Probably not healthy, but definitely a skill!

I've somehow developed a photographic memory, but only for Zoom chat messages. I can recall exactly what was typed in a meeting chat from weeks ago, who said it, and roughly when in the meeting it occurred. Completely useless skill outside of remote work but has saved me multiple times when someone claims 'that wasn't what we agreed to' and I can cite the exact message text.

Voice-to-text dictation at lightning speed. I can now narrate essays at nearly 100wpm while cooking dinner. My partner thinks I'm having intense phone conversations but I'm actually just writing my thesis on medieval literature while making stir fry. Has the side effect that I now unconsciously say 'period' and 'new paragraph' in regular conversations lol.

I can now write flawless emails with zero typos while on calls, thanks to muscle memory from constant multitasking. Also, I’ve developed a near-instant brain reboot—5-second mental reset—to switch gears between school and work tasks without losing focus. Saves me 20+ minutes daily

i’ve got this weird impulse to ctrl+alt+del every time my laptop lags right before a call, almost like i’m training it to survive chaos but honestly it’s just stress and my nerves messing with me nonstop, don’t get cocky thinking you can fix every tech glitch mid-crisis though or you’ll end up missing deadlines while fiddling with settings instead of doing actual work lol

started tuning out background noise so well i can focus even in the noisiest places. also got super picky about what headphones actually keep me sane during back-to-back meetings.
