It feels like so many pro athletes are left clueless once their sports careers end. Is it normal that there’s such little support for planning what’s next professionally after retirement?

in my last job, I worked with a retired athlete who told me it was wild how they were so used to a strict daily routine focused only on sporst. No time for stuff like coding classes or networking. They said once the career ended it felt like being dropped into a new world with zero roadmap. The support system just wasn’t there, and fiugring out what comes next? Super overwhelming.
I guess a big part is how the sports world is like its own bubble — from, like, age 8 or so you're drilled into training and competitions, and honestly, there’s barely any time left for thinking about what life looks like when that ends. Plus, most athletes don’t get much help figuring out things like financial planning or job skills until it’s too late. I mean, one guy I knew struggled for years after retiring because he never built a network outside sports and wasn’t prepared for office politics or just normal 9-to-5 stuff. It’s kind of shocking when you realize that only 20% or so of pro athletes have solid career plans post-retirement. So yeah, it’s super common to feel lost without proper support.
yeah it’s tough cuz their whole identity’s wrapped up in the sport, so when that ends they’re kinda lost not just with jobs but also emo stuff like purpose plus lots of teams/schools don’t really prep them for real-world sklls or networking which is a huge gap and hnestly ofice politics or normal job hustle feel totally foreign after years in such a sheltered environment so it takes time to adjust and find where u fit next.
yeah makes total sense they’re basically all in on sports from a young age so other parts of life are kinda ignored plus most don’t get solid guidance or chances to prep for after sports when you spend all your time training and competing it’s hard to think about stuff like careers or money management so when the end comes suddenly they’re left scrambling with no clear plan or backup totally normal but sucks that support systems don’t do much beyond playing days
