Been grooming dogs for 4 years and I’m torn between staying in my current salon role or taking a training certification path. I already work closely with anxious dogs and owners, and I keep getting told I’d be good at behavior work. The grooming job is stable, but I’m starting to feel boxed in. I’m trying to decide whether I should keep building here and aim for a senior grooming role, or invest time and money into dog training and try to switch careers. What would make the most sense for long-term growth?

You already have a workable niche. Grooming pays the bills, training pays only if you can sell trust and outcomes. If senior salon work feels like a ceiling, test certification part-time first. Burning stable income for vibes is amateur hour.

Your salon background is actually a pretty nice bridge into training, especially with anxious dogs and owners 🙂 If you like the teaching side and can handle more talking than trimming, that path could open up way more room to grow. Staying in grooming for a senior role is safer though, and maybe nicer financially at first. Could be smart to test a cert part-time while you keep earning - at least that’s what worked for me-ish.

you’re not choosing between scissors and collars, you’re choosing between predictable income and a harder sales job with 2x the human drama. If u can tolerate coaching owners, start training part-time while keeping grooming cash flowing. Senior grooming is safer, training has more ceiling.

i did this swwitch after 5 years in grooming. Keep the salon job, start a cert at night, and shadow 2 trainers for 30 days 🐾 If you hate cliient coaching, stay put. Training grows faster, but income got shaky for me the first 8 months
