Dear Hiring Manager,

I am excited to apply for the Senior Data Scientist - Product Insights position at Catawiki. With over 6 years of experience in data science and analytics, I have a strong track record of driving product decisions through data-driven insights. My expertise in A/B testing, causal inference, and building scalable analytics solutions aligns perfectly with the requirements of this role.

In my previous role at an online marketplace, I owned analytics for key product areas, leading to a 15% increase in user engagement through optimized features. I am passionate about leveraging data to uncover opportunities and measure success, and I am eager to bring my skills to Catawiki's unique platform.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the possibility of contributing to your team.

Sincerely, [Your Name]

Can you describe a time when you used A/B testing to drive a product decision? What was the outcome?
At my previous company, we tested a new checkout flow. I designed the A/B test, analyzed the results, and found a 10% increase in conversion rate. This led to the permanent implementation of the new flow.
How do you approach building a dashboard for a product team?
I start by understanding the team's key metrics and goals. Then I identify data sources, design the dashboard with clear visualizations, and ensure it is self-service. I also include annotations for context and set up alerts for anomalies.
Explain a complex data problem you solved using causal inference.
We wanted to measure the impact of a recommendation algorithm on user engagement. Using propensity score matching, I created a control group and found a 5% lift in session duration, which justified the algorithm's rollout.
How do you prioritize which product areas to analyze when there are multiple opportunities?
I prioritize based on potential business impact, data availability, and stakeholder urgency. I also consider whether insights can be generalized across the platform. I use a framework like ICE (Impact, Confidence, Ease) to score opportunities.
Describe your experience with building scalable data pipelines.
I have worked with data engineers to design pipelines using Airflow and Spark. For example, I automated the ingestion of user event data from Kafka to our data warehouse, reducing latency from hours to minutes and enabling real-time dashboards.

About the role and team

With thousands of active lots every day, hundreds of thousands of daily bids, millions of users, and billions of events, the Catawiki platform generates vast amounts of data every day. All this data is being collected and stored, and used extensively by our team of 19 data scientists and engineers that want to build a better company by using data in a smart way. At Catawiki, we believe in using data for making decisions, and the Data Science & Analytics team plays a central role in that.

We are looking for a Senior Data Scientist – Product Insights to work with our Product teams and leverage data to identify user journey opportunities and measure success of our product features and teams.

You will be part of the Data Science Product Insights Team helping us make sense of our data, finding actionable insights and creating self-service opportunities by combining data from multiple sources and working closely together with your colleagues in other departments.

In this role no two days will be the same: you will build dashboards, design and analyse A/B tests, uncover trends in user behaviour, collaborate with your Data colleagues on discovery for a new ML model, or enhance the reliability of our data pipelines. Whatever the task, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping Catawiki’s product solutions and deliver real impact.

What You’ll Do

  • Own analytics for a broad product area – Unlike at larger companies where analytics roles are more specialized, at Catawiki, you’ll take full ownership of a major part of the platform. This could mean leading analytics for all buyer-facing features, all seller-facing experiences, or everything related to fulfillment. You’ll build strong relationships with stakeholders and proactively identify opportunities by deeply understanding Catawiki’s user behavior.
  • Turn data into insights and recommendations – You’ll go beyond tracking metrics—you’ll define and refine key success measures, uncover trends, and translate data into clear recommendations. Your insights will help shape Product decisions, flag opportunities, and drive the strategy forward. Through dashboards and reports, you’ll make sure the right information is always at hand to guide the business.
  • Leverage advanced analytics – Using techniques like regression analysis, causal inference, and A/B testing, you’ll analyze user behavior, identify actionable insights, and evaluate the effectiveness of new features to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Enable data-driven decision-making at scale – You’ll identify and implement self-service data solutions that empower Product teams to make informed decisions faster. Beyond Product analytics, you’ll contribute to foundational data projects like building scalable data pipelines, improving data accessibility, and expanding our A/B Experimentation program.

Who You Are

  • Experienced data leader – You have a strong quantitative background and 6+ years of experience in data science or analytics, ideally in an online company. You’re comfortable owning complex projects and guiding teams in data-driven decision-making.
  • Advanced technical skills – You’re highly proficient in SQL and experienced in writing code to transform data into insights, whether in Python, R, or another language. You can handle large datasets, optimize data pipelines, and work with tools like Looker Studio, Tableau, Power BI, and data transformation tools like dbt or Dataform.
  • Deep statistical expertise – You have a strong grasp of statistics and apply advanced techniques like regression analysis, causal inference, time series modeling, and hypothesis testing to extract meaningful insights and drive impact.
  • Web and app analytics – You have extensive experience with tracking tools like Google Analytics (GA) and Google Tag Manager (GTM), and can design, implement, and validate measurement strategies.
  • Experimentation and impact analysis – You have hands-on experience designing and evaluating A/B tests and other experiments, ensuring robust methodologies that lead to actionable insights.
  • Strategic problem solver – You go beyond analyzing data—you proactively identify opportunities, define success metrics, and influence business and product strategy through data-driven recommendations.
  • Strong communicator and mentor – You work effectively with leadership, engineers, and product teams, translating complex data insights into clear recommendations. You also enjoy mentoring junior data scientists and fostering a data-driven culture.
  • Proactive and entrepreneurial mindset – You take ownership, solve problems autonomously, and drive initiatives forward—even when it means stepping outside your comfort zone.
